At least they knew to start and end with the best real segments: the former a Jim Henson puppet-led warning that physical will defeat digital by any means necessary (as they should!), the latter an RZA-directed ultra-bloody homage from the daughter of a record producer too eager to keep his legacy.

VHS Mixtape: Feels very weird being a GWAR fan and thinking they brought this down, but yeah! 4 real segments in this horror anthology, 3 are legit pretty good, and there's also a cool 30sec claymation Flying Lotus short, a good Repugnant music video, a good GWAR intro, and 7 more GWAR hostsegments.

I get that I’m “The ZIM guy” but this is always the kind of stuff that inspires me. In fact certain movies, this, Don’t Look Up, Beau is Afraid, they always make me think of the kind of worlds I obsess over, for how grotesque and how possessed of a desire to say something, even something hideous.

Other Mommy: Certainly not Rob Savage's worst (Dashcam), but certainly not his best (Host). Jessica Chastain gives her all in terms of being creepy as hell, but vast overemphasis on jumpscares (some very good! the best is in the trailer) and a shittier end than the book dampen this cool premise.

Pan's Labyrinth: A classic. One of three del Toros I still hadn't seen, so I knew I had to jump at the chance the week of its theater rerelease with a new anniversary 4K restoration. Gorgeous, haunting, and one of his best for so many reasons. Well worth the wait.

A tight and anxious (especially if you're squeamish on looks, or on people orgasming over the thought of their own funeral reception) 90mins with a couple that really deserves each other. A slow-mo tragedy that feels sped up, helped by a near-hypnotic score by Turns.

Sick of Myself: Director Kristoffer Borgli has gotten a lot of attention himself this year for his newest release The Drama. Worthwhile to look into his catalogue and see he's always had the chaotic goods! 2 narcissists date, one's desperate for attention at all costs to her own well-being.

The Creep Tapes season 3: A rare binge for me (6 ~20min eps makes that easier than so so many other shows these days), worth it if you're already a fan of this horror series. Better than the films, but mostly still surprised at how refreshing?, unrepetitive?, the ride feels. What a ride "Anisha" is

The Vanishing (1988): When people say a film is evil, but this actually is. Two obsessions colliding via fate, bad luck, innocuous accidents, circumstance: however you want to describe it. The end is the same, equally horrible, and yet unable to run away from. The desire to know overcomes all.

Too dimly lit, too much "boss being a dick" filling up the first 50mins, and by the end the (stellar) final 20mins just couldn't overcome everything else to feel satisfying. Congrats Shudder, you tricked me again

Infirmary: I'm not even mad about being disappointed. This one's on me. I fell for the trailer, despite knowing it was a low-budget found footage Shudder debut. I fell for a review saying it had Gonjiam vibes. I get the appeal of going in blind.

Verity: Feels like a 90s erotic thriller that's beautifully shot and works well because of the cast; Dakota Johnson [still] good but solidly third place behind Anne Hathaway (AMAZING year for her) and Josh Hartnett. Really liked! Will never read the book though, sorry to the hooverites out there.

The Blob (1988): First time I've seen the full remake (yeah I know, the gaps I have are surprising). Long day ahead of me, long month ahead of me, wanted to start it right. Boy did I ever! Paranoia of the Cold War era consuming everyone around, strongest in the first half. Practical effects forever!

Primetime: Doesn't go all the way you want it to, but it's sleazy enough, and Oppenheim is artistic enough in his approach to depicting its sleaziness, I can't complain much! Good debut for Phoebe Bridgers btw!

Verdict after a relisten: a bit of both, by design and still good enough it's a solid solid debut by a promising young artist, and worth multiple listens. Definitely frontloaded with impressive confident lyricism and beats, peaking for me with Sky Rockets or the first Tyler collab Look Like My Mama.

Not to mention the balls to pull off that kind of emotional depth and heartbreaking twist with the character you spend all this time with that's entirely in line with the franchise at its core. Give him a blank check for the next decade, and consider me seated opening day for whatever he puts out.

Resident Evil (2026): Those fucking nerds spent half a year trying to say the director of Barbarian and Weapons didn't know RE, just for him to get the feel perfect of how it is to actually play for the first time and not know what you're doing (and still not feel confident when you figure it out).
