American political scholars don't even have models for this shit. This corruption is so brazen and transparently transactional for self-enrichment, it's not been seen in US politics in 100 years. At this scale, it's never been seen.

Donald Trump cannot be trusted to lead America into war. He is unaccountable to America. He is lawless. He only seeks conflict to cover up for his failures. Congress must step up and reassert its power. No more forever wars.

Lots of people sharing this clip because it's funny and cathartic but I also genuinely believe it's important. We have to win the narrative battle between "I live in a corrupt society and that's just how it is" and "I live in a corrupt society and we are going to defeat and humiliate these ghouls."

Hi, I'm the ProPublica reporter who's been tracking an unusual stat: U.S. citizens grabbed by immigration agents. I did it because the government isn’t. This is what I found.
White words on a black background read:

50+
Immigration agents have the authority to detain whom they reasonably suspect are in the country illegally. We found more than 50 Americans who were held after agents questioned their citizenship. They were almost all Latino.

~130
Agents also can arrest citizens who allegedly interfered with or assaulted officers. We compiled cases of about 130 Americans, including a dozen elected officials, accused of assaulting or impeding officers.

~20
Among the citizens detained are nearly 20 children, including two with cancer.

NEW — The National Treasury Employees Union Chapter 282 just emailed its ~8,000 employee members strongly advising them NOT to reply to the “What did you do last week?” email from OPM/Musk.
NTEU
National Treasury Employees Union
CHAPTER 282
Good evening NTEU Members,
You may have recently received an email from the Office of Personnel Management
(OPM) requesting that you submit a bullet-point summary of your work from last week.
NTEU strongly advises you NOT to respond to this OPM request at this time.
Here's why:
• We work for HHS/FDA, not OPM: OPM directives that have not been formally adopted or communicated by our employer, the FDA, do not create an obligation for you to respond.
• Lack of Concurrence: This request appears to have been issued without the necessary coordination and agreement from the FDA.
• Protecting Your Rights: We are concerned about the implications of this request and are actively working to protect your rights and interests.• Protecting Your Rights: We are concerned about the implications of this request and are actively working to protect your rights and interests.
• NTEU Action: NTEU National and our Office of General Counsel are aware of this situation and are taking immediate action. We are gathering information and will provide you with
comprehensive guidance before the arbitrary deadline stated in the OPM email.
What you should do:
• Do not respond to the OPM email.
• Retain the OPM email for your records.
• Monitor your email for further updates from NTEU.

The viridis palettes are great perceptually uniform color maps for #dataviz, but sometimes at the extremes they're too pale/dark. With ggplot and #rstats, though, you can truncate the palette to avoid the paler colors. I wrote a little guide for how datavizf24.classes.andrewheiss.com/news/2024-12...
When you use scale_fill_viridis_d() or scale_color_viridis_d(), ggplot chops the viridis color map into evenly spaced colors along the range of the gradient. For instance, if you have a plot with 4 categories, you’ll end up with these colors:

Figure showing 8 viridis palettes chopped at 0%, 33%, 66%, and 100%R code for creating a bar chart four four continents, with one of the bars filled with a really really pale yellow from the viridis magma paletteFigure showing the 8 viridis palettes, but starting at 10% and ending at 80%, resulting in colors at at 10%, 33%, 57%, and 80%R code for creating a bar chart four four continents, with the bars filled with colors from a truncated viridis magma palette because of scale_fill_viridis_d(option = "magma", begin = 0.1, end = 0.8)
