Probably should've taken the proper time to make a decent résumé before I started filling out job applications. Better late than never I suppose. Also added a services page to my website in case you were wondering what I do. Could use more details, but at least there's a page now.

It's been a good while since I've written something, but here it is. I wrote a short piece on this malleable version of diffuse.sh that's in alpha. Why did I build this and how, but also, what can you actually do with this thing? How does it relate to Patchwork and Tonk? tokono.ma/essays/diffu...

Worth a try: my job is winding down, so I'm looking for something new from January. Senior software engineer, TypeScript and Go. Digital identity now, building features end to end: libraries, APIs, dashboard. Before: Protocol Labs, on Kubo. Remote preferred, I'm in NL. Boosts appreciated.

@bumble.blue It finished! It did one-shot the thing, just took a while. Probably needs a few tweaks, like not syncing the settings with all members. Very cool that you can just have the data shared straight away with anyone. Great work! 👏 cc @cdata.earth @gozala.io Here's the share link:

Quite liking this setup ✨ Niri (compositor) + Noctalia (shell) + Vicinae (launcher) MacOS icons + cursor Adwaita Sans is quite good! Not gonna attempt to restyle window decorations anymore, there's always an application where it doesn't work.
Screenshot of desktop, shows customised Noctalia bar + Vicinae launcher.

I did end up creating one and after exactly one week my account already got suspended?! Now I have to verify using my gov id to get access back. What the actual fuck 😩 Probably should've set up 2FA or something I guess. Not sure if my account got taken over or if this is just LinkedIn being stupid?

We got our first usable alpha version 🙌 diffuse.sh/4.0.0-alpha.3/ Silently cut the first alpha release not too long ago, but since made some big changes like: - Implemented the DASL MASL spec + `.tile` CAR files - Bi-directional data lenses - Audio engine rework

Just had a timed skill assessment test 💀 I think we can all agree that these are a bad thing, right? I can't function at all when there's a timer before my eyes. How the fuck am I supposed to write functioning React code in 3 minutes?! 15 years of frontend dev experience for this bs?

Looks like what I've been building is quite similar to what the foundation of Patchwork-26 is. Lots of "tiny apps" (atomization of software, loosely coupled) + just the web. Local-first and where everything revolves around the content (data-first, can use preferred UI/view). Happy to see this! 🎉

Regarding the personal apps thing, I think it’s cool that we can do this, but it only works to a certain degree. How do we make it easier for non-tech folks & how do we deal with complex subjects? I like what I came up with for diffuse.sh as a 1st exploration, but I do wonder about other solutions

What’s your favourite audio playback or browsing interface? (of all time) Desktop ———— Playback: Winamp 2 Browsing: Albums app (iPad app on MacOS) Phone ——— Playback: Music app iOS Browsing: ??? (honestly don’t know if I ever had a good experience here)

It's alive 🎉 Good stuff @dholms.at! It doesn't have the ability yet to invite others to the space. Are all the pieces for that already in the alpha SDK?
Atmosphere, space edition, facet for Diffuse. Allows for playlists, tracks and other data to be stored in on a space.

What a rabbit hole.. I'm getting authorization errors for #atproto logins. Turns out that a particular kind and instance of a IPFS server is configured to require authorization when it receives a request with OpenTelemetry headers, which the default Bluesky PDS includes when it requests client.json

So cool that I can just generate this interface without interfering with the rest of the software.
A generated interface for Diffuse that interacts with the data and components already enabled on your Diffuse dashboard. This one checks the selected playlist for which tracks cannot be found in your audio collection and then renders a list with a preview button which plays a preview for that track from Deezer.

Time to dogfood this thing properly. Seems to work ok on desktop, but still no passkey manager with proper PRF support on my old iPhone 💀 (besides iCloud) I do want to experiment with permissioned data as well, but I like the semi-public aspect of this.

Took a little break, want to get an alpha of @diffuse.sh out soon but still so much to do. I did finally finish that "pick your app version" experiment. I moved everything to @filebase.bsky.social and switched to the new unixfs-v1-2025 CID profile. Works pretty well and loads faster than Netlify 👌

I think I might be missing CDs (compilation discs, for the young people out there). There was so much great music I got to know through these, and I haven't had any equivalent for a while. When I still bought music from Apple Music there were some compilations on there. But now that's gone as well.

After a lot of trial and error, I might finally have a decent syncing setup for my atproto integration. There's 4 kinds of data: facets, playlist items, settings & tracks. Each kind that is likely to have over a 100 items is grouped into bundles. Bundles are split into groups depending on the data.
130
Steven Vandevelde @tokono.ma · 09/05/2026
This is something I made possible in Diffuse v4, the playlist item lexicon allows you to match to any data associated with a track (album, year, bpm, etc) Haven’t made any UI for this though. First priority is getting the atproto integration stable, pds rate limits you’re killing me 🫠

That said, we're getting closer to the goal though. Have LLMs generate working UIs in minutes on top of your user-data and the malleable platform underneath it. Just generated this UI, it just borks the code because regular Claude isn't allowed to fetch code without explicitly linking to it.
210
Steven Vandevelde @tokono.ma · 21/04/2026
Claude really doesn't like fetching Javascript does it... I tried having it analyse nested JS code, but it only fetches URLs you explicitly put in the prompt; so it can't resolve any imports. It also removes any scripts from HTML pages. Why is that?! (not talking about Claude Code, just reg chat)

I just saw the awesome Web Tiles talk from ATmosphereConf which demos a little audio player and I now wish I could adapt my thing. Still not sure it's actually possible. I worry that it does too much sandboxing to integrate with various api/oauth flows, but maybe I'm thinking of this the wrong way.
