First day of class: going over the syllabus and happily sharing my updated AI policy with students (the basic framework cribbed from Berkely Law) and, more importantly, the reasons why it needs to be banned in the arts, teacher education, and art education specifically. #EduSky #AI #HigherEd
Screenshot of a syllabus excerpt:

Any use of GenAI tools to generate course work will be considered a violation of the university’s Academic Honesty policy and is subject to appropriate discipline.
The purposes of this policy are:
1.	to ensure the best education possible for University of Maine students in Art Education by equipping them to perform activities constitutive of excellent teaching, such as:
•	mastering pedagogical theory,
•	using scholarly reasoning and critical thinking to devise lessons
•	applying educational and developmental concepts to novel pedagogical questions, and
•	independently making art, performing, and collaboratively developing creative solutions;
2.	to promote fairness and equity for artists, academics, authors, and others whose work has been and is used without consent or compensation to train, develop, refine, maintain, and advance GenAI;
3.	to resist the uncritical adoption of GenAI in education and the arts, prevent the encroachment of surveillance capitalism, reverse environmental collapse; and
4.	to preserve the right of students to be taught by a human teacher, to perform authentic tasks, to learn using human means, and to be authentically assessed by a human assessor without technological mediation, intervention, or control.

A good editor would have rejected the entire article except for the first line. Sometimes brevity is best.
The words "I am a fraud." as appearing in as the first line of the article "When AI writes the words, who is the author?" submitted by and credited to (but not written by) Bertie Fielding, purported to represent Bertie Fielding's understanding that he is, in fact, an utter fraud.

Excellent timing. Now will someone please clap?
Screen grad of two skeets, the first from amy brown says "hey guys i just dropped my son at his first day of public school and didn't cry until i was safely back in the car please clap" The second skeet from Tressie McMillan Cottom says "huge design flaw in adulthood: no one claps when you do the right thing."

From Toby Allen (zestydoesthings on Instragram) There is NEVER an ethical excuse for using generative AI. www.instagram.com/zestydoesthi...
GEN-AI IS THEFT
Generative Ai models such as chatgpt, sora and midjourney steal from artists/photographers/ writers/translators/3d modelers and uses
millions of creator's work without permission. ANY use of gen-ai in any creative industry is denying a skilled creator a job.

There is NEVER an ethical excuse for using generative Ai.GEN AI IS DE*TH

Generative Ai models use an incredible amount of energy to answer a single question or generate one image. Ai data centres require a lot of electricity and water to cool down the hardware and they also produce a lot of electronic waste. This is having a detrimental effect on our environment, effecting us and our plant's wildlife.

There is NEVER an ethical excue for using generative Ai.GEN-AI IS WRONG

Not only is it morally and ethically wrong, gen- ai responces often include incorrect information or fabricated truths. Photos created via gen-ai are becoming increasingly more difficult to spot, leading to potentially dangerous misinformation.

There is NEVER an ethical excuse for using generative AiGEN-AI IS RACIST

Gen-ai data centres are primarily built in BIPOC and low-income communities, exposing them to harmful waste and increasing electricity costs. This is by choice. Gen-ai data sets have been shown to express a bias against non-white communities.

There is NEVER an ethical excuse for using generative Ai

The Crystal Palace, a massive gorgeous self-supporting steel structure (no internal walls!) lined in glass panels, was built in five months in 1850 for the Great Exhibition of 1851. Just to give a sense of what's possible if you're not a completely incompetent grifter.

I've been a digital artist for over 30 years. Not only do I not use AI, I've switched from sculpting in Z-Brush w/ physics based rendering to 3D printing, assembling & fabricating the finished pieces by hand. Because there is no soul in the machine, every imperfection and quirk is mine alone.

Hilarious. BlueSky's agentic AI pivot "attie.ai" so instantly reviled that it's shooting up the most-blocked list, already well past ICE, and is soon to surpass the Trump whitehouse. 😂

Grammarly wants to know if I'm taking a break from writing.🙄 Nope. I'm taking a break from Grammarly—pushing AI slop that impersonates writers and plagiarizes from them is reason to make it a permanent break. Plus Grammarly can get fucked with the gamified bullshit—writing isn't steps on a fitbit.

There's a lot of speculation Roberts must be in the Epstein files or that some kompromat makes him rule this way. FFS, people. He has agency! He's always been corrupt & awful. "This is an exciting time[...], when so much that has been taken for granted for so long is being seriously reconsidered."

They're also pinkwashing the spammyness. Wood got slammed by bigots for a Pride month IG post, but the way they're raising money off it feels gross. FWIW, I can't find any proof Blue Amp Action PAC ever spent a dime on any candidate, with most of the $ going to Blue Amp Action LLC for consulting.
Campaign email "insulted" paid for by Blue Amp Action PAC:

"Timothy, I want to share something deeply personal with you.

Since I launched my Democratic campaign to replace GOP Senator Susan Collins, I’ve received such heartwarming support from so many of you. I am incredibly grateful.

But to be honest, Timothy, it hasn’t all been positive.

Some are telling me I don’t deserve to run for office. Or serve in the Senate. Or even be a father – because I’m gay."

I remember liberals 20 years ago being disarmed by how handsome John Roberts was, especially his dreamy blue eyes. Two decades of enabling fascism haven't been kind, but at least now we know what it looks like when the soul leaves the body.

Making this abjectly awful idea even more vile, @neatoday.bsky.social is screening applicants, likely so only true believers will be allowed to participate. And those essays? AI cannot make K-12 schools more equitable, inclusive, or advocate for all students. FFS, AI is regressive fascist trash.
The following attachments/information will be required as part of the application criteria:
Resume (2-page max in .PDF or .DOC format) OR LinkedIn Profile URL

What guardrails, @rweingarten.bsky.social? OpenAI, Anthropic, & MS already flagrantly violate all 9 core values. AI is: Unsafe Anti-human Disempowering Inequitable & unfair Fascistic Uncritical & uncreative Intellectually dishonest Socially irresponsible Environmentally catastrophic What now?

Technology in Schools" available here: https://www.aft.org/sites/default/files/media/documents/2024/Commonsense_Guardrails_AI_0604.pdf

Nothing wrong with subjecting policies to scrutiny, but the time-is-money argument is... charitably absurd. No, saving half an hour a day wouldn't net a rider an extra $10. That's not how clocking in/ out works. And they'd still have to subtract the $2.90 fare. $7 for express. Each way.
Excerpt from the Slate article:

"Low-income passengers themselves often say they would prefer speedier and more reliable transit service than one that’s free of charge. Basic math can explain why: If a bus rider makes $20 per hour and their commute takes an average of 40 minutes, reducing their average trip to 25 minutes would save them half an hour per day, worth the equivalent of $10—far more than the price of a round-trip ride."

This may be too clever by half, but I happen to agree with Senator Lee. Right-wing violence, particularly this form of fascistic, evangelically inspired vigilantism, is what happens when even the mildest left critique is maligned as extreme, while actually extreme right-wing bigotry is normalized.
Senator Mike Lee tweet with the text "This is what happens When Marxists don't get their way" and a photograph of alleged Minneapolis assassin Vance Boelter wearing a mask accompanied by a Community Note stating that there is no evidence Vance Boelter is a Marxist.

It will also have consequences for college-goers (including those who leave without a degree). ED services 43 million student loans in their $1.6 portfolio. Trump has already broken PSLF and IDR. The executive order telegraphs their intent to sell off/privatize the loans. This. Must. Not. Happen.
Text from Trump's 3/20/2025 executive order, Improving Education Outcomes by Empowering Parents, States, and Communities.

"Closure of the Department of Education would drastically improve program implementation in higher education. The Department of Education currently manages a student loan debt portfolio of more than $1.6 trillion. This means the Federal student aid program is roughly the size of one of the Nation’s largest banks, Wells Fargo. But although Wells Fargo has more than 200,000 employees, the Department of Education has fewer than 1,500 in its Office of Federal Student Aid. The Department of Education is not a bank, and it must return bank functions to an entity equipped to serve America’s students."

The final sentence is underlined.

www.bbc.com/news/article... The passive construction in this passage says it all. Issues of respect and gratitude did NOT fuel the shitshow. Vnce's explosion came only after Zelenskyy correctly related the history of Putin's aggression— and Russia's present & future influence over Trump and the US.
Extract from the linked article:

And a short time later, larger issues of respect and gratitude fuelled the extraordinary argument that saw the US president and vice-president upbraid their European ally in front of the world's TV cameras.

As a poor kid at a rich school, I encountered just this sort of abusive asshole all the time. Kids who'd try to buy their way into relationships/friendships and then demand their marks be constantly thankful, obsequious, and mindless. Somehow Vance is both the abuser and the lickspittle toady.

Nope. That's an old press release from August about the previous injunction. Grosz has decided to come after the entire foundation of forgiveness under ICR and REPAYE
However, we find this case presents such special circumstances, namely the portion of the old rule the federal officials seek to revive suffers from the same legal errors as the one challenged here — the Secretary lacks
the power to authorize loan forgiveness in an ICR plan. We therefore conclude the district court’s injunction should be broadened to enjoin the Secretary’s attempt to forgive loans in the SAVE plan through the old REPAYE provisions.

The idea that Republican 'school choice' efforts were targeted at helping low-income families get into private or charter schools is ludicrous. School choice has only ever been about defunding public education.
A paragraph from the linked article reading, "School choice has long been a cornerstone of the GOP agenda, with a significant number of Republican-led states freeing up more funding in recent years for low-income families to send their students to private or charter schools."

The claim expressed in this paragraph is a lie.

With Biden's announcement, next week's negotiated rule-making has me worried they've embraced a technocratic approach to fixing a broken system when being fixed still means indenturing millions for decades to come— and calling that outcome success. www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-roo...
1. Many borrowers have seen their balances grow due to the accrual of unpaid interest such that many borrowers now have overall balances higher than what they originally borrowed. Are there ways to help borrowers who are in this situation that could put them on a better path for successful repayment?
