Was invited to Meta Connect today. Eye rolled my way through all the AI talk to here about the VR "glasses". Hardware looks very nice! Laughed when Mark practically mumbled the $1300 price tag. No talk of FOV either, which make me suspicious.

Since the question came up on Mastodon I'll answer here too: The Steam Frame won't have WebXR support in Chromium at launch. The Chrome team hasn't had access to the hardware or headcount available to work on it.

A distressing amount of my (and my coworkers) time lately has been spent on "No reasonable program would ever actually try to do this, and in fact Vulkan and Friends forbid it, BUT the GL spec technically allows it AND it blows up real good on driver XYZ, so it's a WebGL problem now."

I’ve alway’s thought it’s a shame that WebAssembly has the word “web” in it. Gives it a connotation that it’s “only for browsers” or something.   Meanwhile, NASA’s over here with a flight-compliant derivative (SpaceWASM) intended for spacecraft!

Saw some of the GTA 6 footage that was released and it's truly remarkable what they're pulling off with the rendering! It's a shame I have zero interest in the game itself. If I'm playing a game where the whole point is to run around causing chaos and making NPCs miserable, I'd rather be a goose.

This is probably true, but I'd say VR programming is a close second? Not only can you make yourself seriously ill by screwing up your equilibrium, but you also run the risk of smashing into things if you get out of alignment with your physical space.

I've landed the last change needed to enable #WebGPU by default on Samsung devices with an Xclipse GPU (mobile RDNA)! Should be available in Chrome 153, which will be stable in September. These GPUs are most common in Europe, but there are some in other markets (like the Galaxy S25 FE in the US).

For several months now TypeScript v6/v7 has had an incomplete version of the WebGPU types in their "dom" library, which caused errors in WebGPU apps. The last of the missing symbols was added 2 weeks ago, so you can now follow the instructions here to fix it:

When Jurassic Park came out I was Tim's age. I was obsessed. It was my favorite movie by a long shot, and Alan Grant was a superhero in my eyes. Now I'm Alan Grant's age, the movie is still one of my favorites, and I'm very sad that my childhood hero is gone. Thanks for the memories, Sam!

I think if you needed any more evidence that the cuts are shortsighted and focused on cutting as deep and as fast as possible with little regard for the future, this is pretty definitive. That engine felt like magic in some spots. A colossal waste of talent and resources.
