Tori @toguchi.bsky.social · 07/10/2026On the day of the Autumnal equinox (秋のお彼岸), the sunset was so beautiful! In Okinawa, people usually observe at home with their Butsudan and Hinukan. Some offer/eat Fuchagi. Usually around this time, there are also harvest festivals (usually Tsunahiki or Hounensai). 1171

This week, this month has just been heartbreaking in terms of lives taken and of men getting away with so much harm. 0103
Tori @toguchi.bsky.social · 06/10/2026Additionally, I'd assume that goat is-was also probably more commonly available than Agu. 020
Tori @toguchi.bsky.social · 06/10/2026Yes. Historically the Ryukyu Kingdom (now Okinawa Prefecture) was not part of Japan, so it has its own unique food culture. Agu Pork was the Ryukyu Kingdom's pork before WWII almost decimated the population. I do assume that if you were of the gentry class, it was more common to eat pig. 1100
Tori @toguchi.bsky.social · 06/10/2026Contemporary Okinawan diets are not mostly vegetarian. There's a lot of meat dishes. Traditionally? It probably depended on your social status. Pork has always been a big thing in the Okinawan diet. 2242

Tori @toguchi.bsky.social · 19/08/2026I think the part using talking about the term 'onigiri' and 'musubi' was about rice balls more generally, not about spam being inside of it. But I would assume for general, non-spam rice balls, that there are definitely regional varieties of items used inside! 000

Tori @toguchi.bsky.social · 09/08/2026By region in Okinawa or in Hawaiʻi? I think it's pretty normal for the ones in Hawaiʻi to use sugar during the marination process. I think Japanese Hawaiʻi and Japanese American flavors can also differentiate a little. Is your supermarket in the Continental US? 110
Tori @toguchi.bsky.social · 09/08/2026Hawaiian does not equal something or anybody who comes from Hawaiʻi. Spam Musubi is not Hawaiian, Lau Lau is Hawaiian. I may be from Hawaiʻi, but that doesn't make me Hawaiian. It makes me a local from Hawaiʻi. Hawaiian = Native Hawaiian (Kānaka, Kānaka ʻōiwi, Kānaka maoli). 070
Tori @toguchi.bsky.social · 09/08/2026The discrimination was so bad that even intermarriage between the two ethnic groups wasn't widely accepted for half a century. I assume WWII, the civil rights movements of the 50's and 60's, local culture, and the passing of time allowed relationships between the two groups to improve. 020
Tori @toguchi.bsky.social · 09/08/2026If you grew up in an Okinawan family with plantation ties, it was normal to hear that your grandparents or their families were told "Okinawa ken ken buta kau kau" or "Okinawa Big Rope, eat pig slop," in the sugar plantation camps. 130
Tori @toguchi.bsky.social · 09/08/2026I find it interesting that pork products are so popular in Hawaiʻi and that the local Japanese community in particular, eats so much pork and spam. It's quite a contrast to the plantation days when the Japanese would condescendingly belittle Okinawans for their consumption of pork. 140
Tori @toguchi.bsky.social · 09/08/2026Small correction, this would be considered local food in the islands. Hawaiian food would be traditional foods like Lau Lau, Poi, Squid Lūʻau, Haupia, Kalua Pig, etc etc. Local foods are definitely a mixed plate of different cultural foods, though! 000
