watching battle of algiers before umbrellas of cherbourg turned out an accidentally tasteless double feature about french colonialism. the indignity and inhumanity of life and death in the casbah kind of renders the tragic story of young love lost as nothing more than saccharine bourgeoise nonsense.

stayed up too late but i watched les parapluies de cherbourg and it broke my heart. i’ll be cranky in the morning but at least it gave me the opportunity to bear witness to youthful optimism thwarted. to a love that ages into a world antagonistic to love. professional development tomorrow.

A dear friend once casually referred to my writing as “pseudo-intellectual” and I just don’t think I ever recovered. I’m afraid of looking stupid but I’m way more afraid of looking like I think I’m smart.

Just watched En Kongelig Affære for the first time. I cannot speak to its merits as an accurate period piece, but it is electric as a romance and devastating as a tragedy. This film is inspiring me to learn more about Danish history. I am, above all, a sucker for doomed lovers and downer endings.

definitely a hot take! angella’s sacrifice is, to me, the standout moment of the series. i would love to see her saved in a new movie (i would love more she-ra content, period), but i’m very happy with her arc as it stands. i can’t help but feel like a reversal would diminish the moment for me.

So wild that Carter had an entire career that predates being The Oldest Man Ever for my entire life. I saw him speak live and I thought “Wow this is such an honor, I’ll never get this opportunity again,” and then it happened three more times. Props to a man who defied death for that long.

When I was a small child, I was constantly overwhelmed by the thought that there was at least one mind-reader near me at all times. The majority that resonate with this when I bring it up are 1. People with OCD and 2. Anxious people raised in the church (replace “mindreader” with “omniscient God”).

I feel like American Beauty is a complicated film to which I haven’t really given deeper thought. When I first saw it, I was too young to really *get* it. Now, I’ve been too offended by the superficial premise (and the meta-context re: Spacey) to revisit it. I imagine it has a lot to say besides.

I think Americans make fun of beans on toast just to fit in. Like you saw that making fun of British food got a lot of clicks and stopped thinking critically about it. Some of the grub is grotesque and worthy of your scorn, most of it is normal food. Beans go well on toast.

I grew up in an age almost completely under the thumb of social media. Classmates of mine had MySpace, Facebook became ubiquitous while I was a teenager. I’ve been on Twitter, Reddit and Tumblr pretty much since their inceptions. I never got used to posting. I haven’t practiced enough to get good.

Only bots follow me, I should just post like a journal. I have nothing to lose.

I need to constantly remind myself that I am not a big deal. I am not particularly bad or particularly good. People seldom think about me; few people even remember the things that I regret. I need to be forgiving of others, because they are just as helpless and adrift as me.

I need to quit drinking. I only do it socially (and I’m not very social), but whenever I do I spend the entire next day engaging in my most toxic thought patterns. It’s Christmas Day and I’m sitting in my parents’ home internally reevaluating arguments that I lost over a decade ago.
