Call for plant ecophysiologists! Do you have Fv/Fm or F0-rise data? Do you know someone who might? @seanmichaletz.bsky.social and @nicolebison.bsky.social would love to hear from you. (Bonus if your data are from Asia or Africa.) Please share widely! #ecology #botany #ClimateChange #HeatTolerance

Help us identify drivers of global variation in PSII heat tolerance kinetics. Seeking collaborators and data in Fv/Fm temperature response curves at multiple heat duration and F0-rise curves. Email Nicole dot Bison at ubc dot ca or Sean dot Michaletz at ubc dot ca. Map of sites contributed shows points in North and South America, Europe, and Australia but not Asia or Africa (or Antartica, on the very slim chance someone has data from there).

8 years ago, I tweeted side-by-side maps from NASA GISS showing global temperatures in 1976 and 2018 – both hot summers in the UK. It subsequently went viral and was printed in the Daily Mail! The 2026 version is stark. Two locally extreme summers separated by 50 years of global climate change.

Climate change may reduce the native plant species used by Indigenous cultures in the Amazon basin by one-third, according to research in Nature. The reduction could result in the loss of a quarter of the knowledge associated with the uses of Amazonian plant species by the end of the century. 🌎🧪

Can we actually predict how forests handle extreme heat based on plant heat tolerances? It's tough. A lack of standardized methods and physiological metrics mean results from different studies can’t be readily compared. This make big-picture predictions unreliable. 🌎🪴🍁🌐🧪 #climate #plantecophys

One of the most challenging things to do in the fight against climate change is get the financing needed to develop large-scale carbon removal projects. To do this you have to prove you have the best people, expertise, and science on your side.

Microclimates matter! Presumably the southern edge of these tulips experience more sun/heat and give them a slight head start on blooming compared to those on the northern edge of this row. Spotted at the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival! #tulips #skagitvalley #botany #ecophysiology

The most iconic figure in the environmental sciences is the Keeling Curve, the CO₂ record from Mauna Loa, Hawaii. @noaa.gov had a wonderful site where you could visualize and download these data, and now it's just gone. These data belong to us and we should not let this happen!

We're used to seeing holly leaves depicted as exclusively spiny, but most wild holly plants have spiny and smooth leaves Common holly (I. aquifolium) *changes its gene expression* to produce spines in response to damage by herbivores. Each pair here is from the same plant 📷 Herrera & Bazaga 2013
