Yes, please. It's difficult enough to keep track of Australia, Norway, and USA time zones in relation to each other (especially since Australia changes in the opposite direction). Having the change spread out across a month means October and March are impossible for scheduling.

There's lots of discussion about moving overseas to escape queerphobia, poor scientific funding, political research agendas. I'm in the (slow) process of moving Australia to Norway as a US citizen so I'll make a running thread about the financial realities of international moves.

Of course, with the power dynamic that exists between a professor and a student, consent is a difficult issue. A student may feel they can't say no. They may feel they can't report. They may be unable to continue their studies if things go badly, even if no harm is intended. There's no equal footing

3D printed pollen is a great way to captivate an audience of ecologists. Thanks to Limi Mao for the seminar with props!
A large spiny ball (like a hollow pufferfish) painted in orange-pink. Four large pollen grains in yellow, pink, and orange. The one I'm holding is particularly peculiar with spines and indents like a deflated football. I'm told it is a Taraxacum pollen grain.

Basically, type specimens are the passwords of biodiversity science. Without them, we're locked out of doing anything. And like passwords, we all too often scribble them down on a post-it note, then forget where it is.

It bugs me that we're normalising the idea that there's something wrong with long documents, or that they're not "worth" our time. There is huge value in careful thought, in detail and nuance, in exploration, and in the experiential journey that goes alongside that.

I type this as the Director of an herbarium, also in the southeastern US, that has "merged with" (i.e., assumed stewardship of) multiple herbaria, including Tulane's herbarium. In my decade in this job, only one research group from Tulane has come to use their former herbarium specimens.

Look, y'all— this is not the worst outcome, but it's also not great. Framing this as gaining a notably large herbarium is spin; the reality is a historic, important herbarium has lost its identity. The specimens were never going to be trashed; Duke still voluntarily truncated their botanical legacy.

Taking an extended layover in Singapore was the best travel decision I've made. I spent most of the day at two botanic gardens marvelling at plants, hornbills, and even a monitor lizard. (Plus, it meant I had a break between the 8 hr and 13 hr flights.)
Complex grey green palm fronds drape over a stepped concrete walk.
