What if our ears were like our eyes, and only had three (types of) receptors? Interestingly speech is still more or less intelligible, but not much else to me this shows how much more discriminating of frequencies our hearing is than our vision. Of course our vision has much more spatial resolution

chaos from bouncing a ball in a circle- at each point, I simulate a bunch of futures with slightly different velocities- showing how predictable the system would be with measurement error. The system seems to move between Stable Eras and Chaotic Eras, where it is hard to predict four bounces ahead

We lowered the ticket prices for RustWeek! Individual tickets are now 199 instead of 249 euro. ✨ Additionally, we added a checkbox for an extra 100 euro discount, bringing the ticket price to just 99 euros for those who can't afford the full price. 💛
Radio button: Conference Ticket - Privately-paid tickets (also for freelancers) - €199.00

Checkbox: I can’t afford this, give me €100 discount

This blog post is bit of a culmination about me thinking about `n..` ranges in Rust for way too long time. It is about why I think the current semantics for the iterator are wrong. erk.dev/2026/08/30/r...

So how do you manage adding new commits to a PR? Always add them before the change associated with the PR I guess?
100
Tyler Mandry @tmandry.dev · 16/08/2026
do you ever group multiple changes in the same review?
100
Tyler Mandry @tmandry.dev · 15/08/2026
my point is that while I can use aliases to fix my problems, the meat and potatoes of a very common workflow should not need them to work with that said, I'll check these out, thanks :)

Tyler Mandry @tmandry.dev · 15/08/2026
yeah. and that's cool and all, but there are dozens of us using branches
000
Tyler Mandry @tmandry.dev · 15/08/2026
I'm not sure if I get what you mean. do you mean this? jj describe -m foo # Edit jj new # spawn new change jj git push -c @- I thought empty commits like this disappeared automatically when you moved off of them.
100
Tyler Mandry @tmandry.dev · 15/08/2026
oh, good point. it's still a bit awkward because you don't want to merge it with an empty commit like that..
000
Tyler Mandry @tmandry.dev · 15/08/2026
yeah, companies invest in painting bright lines for you and integrating with their tools. github is a menace, but it /is/ the prior art now. the UX still needs to be excellent.

Tyler Mandry @tmandry.dev · 15/08/2026
In short, I want `jj git push` to ignore trailing empty commits and push the parent instead. I would make this the recommended way to use named branch workflows with multiple commits in a PR Adding a change to a branch becomes `jj new -B branchname`
000
Tyler Mandry @tmandry.dev · 15/08/2026
maybe another way of saying this is: I want a change whose parents are bookmarks, which themselves act like a change with many sub-changes?
000
Tyler Mandry @tmandry.dev · 14/08/2026
Like, if empty changes are The Way (or at least A Way), why does my workflow now involve managing a bunch of off-by-one errors?
010
Tyler Mandry @tmandry.dev · 14/08/2026
What's weird is it feels so *close* to working well. If you set the bookmark to an empty change at the end of a branch, and you could do something like `jj new --before bookmark-name`, cthulu workflow works automatically But `jj git push` refuses to push the bookmark pointing at an empty change
310
Tyler Mandry @tmandry.dev · 14/08/2026
- Create tracked bookmark in one command - Commit and update bookmark - Rebase children of updated bookmark (maintain my cthulu merge commit) Basically I want bookmarks to act more like a bundle of changes. Granted, I'm coming at this with git brain

Tyler Mandry @tmandry.dev · 14/08/2026
Maybe my problem is I never used mercurial? I'd missed `jj next` (and `jj prev`); thanks for that!
110
Tyler Mandry @tmandry.dev · 14/08/2026
this is based on my limited experience using it for a classic GitHub pull request workflow with named bookmarks, so ymmv. please tell me what I'm missing / cool stuff that will change my experience with it!

Tyler Mandry @tmandry.dev · 14/08/2026
primitives like changes as documents, automatic rebasing, good options for manual rebasing, conflict management. all good stuff, and I will continue using it.

Tyler Mandry @tmandry.dev · 14/08/2026
jj is cool, but the base CLI seems more like a "workflow development kit" than an actual workflow people use. it is great for this - it exposes very powerful primitives! I just don't see it becoming the industry standard without more established bright line workflows

I could make one myself for $10 in parts, an hour of work, a trip to the hardware store, another $30 in parts, another few hours of work, two more trips to the store for $20 more in parts, another hour of work to redo the first hour of work because I messed up, and $80 to buy this when the one I made breaks.

It's backwards incompatible to change because unsafe code assumes it. But when we have a hierarchy of Sized traits, we can add a rung for this (below Sized so not the default) and new code could support these types.

For rustc, open a PR and nominate for lang. The most natural order would be if it were upgraded in clippy first. It isn't strictly necessary but gives confidence in the impl. If you face resistance to that, lang could weigh in and say we want this, assuming the rest of the team agrees with me.
