@tizianaleone.bsky.social quantifying how fertility decline reshapes women’s reproductive careers, specifically by increasing their number of menstrual cycles
Title slide from Tiziana’s talk:

Juliet McEachran, Independent researcher
Tiziana Leone, LSE

Recounting lifetime menses: the overlooked impact of fertility transitionConcluding slide

Why this matters and what next
Fertility transition has fundamentally changed women's reproductive careers
Why this is useful
• Replaces a circulated constant with a demographically adjustable estimate of lifetime menses
• The count is heavily driven by reproductive span: -77 cycles of variation from menarche and menopause timing, and -44 lost to childbearing
• A 13-fold spread in postpartum suppression between settings, so no single global figure holds
Gives an exposure denominator for endometriosis.
970 6 9 endometrial cancer and menstrual-related productivity
loss.

What next

• Trace change within countries, using the seven
Philippines rounds as the test case

• Express results as a rate per reproductive year. separating span effects from fertility effects

• Add the missing terms: contraceptive suppression, adolescent and perimenopausal irregularity not feasible
