What I find so incredibly frustrating about this coverage is that the same people condemning this as a "national disgrace" would absolutely also condemn literally any step taken to solve it www.heraldsun.com.au/health/wellb...

no Australian newspaper is as good as it was 20 years ago, and even then the Australian was publishing ludicrous climate denial stuff and Greg Sheridan and Dennis Shanahan so I don't want to pretend like it was perfect, but wow has there been a fall-off

I'm just not sure that's true? I mean in the first few elections the party an awful lot of country people were consistently voting for was the Labor Party? The creation of a conservative party just for the country was a pretty distinct development in our history and not an inevitable one

I mean this is a fair point except that the Country Party wasn't formed until 1919/1920 depending on how you date it

I think they do pretty well! The current idea that the Greens are in a crisis post 2025 is so very silly when their underperformance was more about a quirk in our system than any real trend

Right now, the PA/Fatah supports a 2SS. Hamas (sort of) supports a 2SS. The Arab League supports a 2SS. The State of Israel unequivocally and very explicitly does not! If you think a 2SS is the best path forward, you need to be focused on bringing Israel in line with the international consensus.

Some of us are omnidirectionally bad at parking. I tend to nose in because I’m gonna fuck it up either way and I feel self conscious where people can see me. But I can’t say I’m super invested in how others park their cars?

I get that this is a common belief of a lot of china hawks but why would the CCP risk a destabilising war with Taiwan where an awful lot of people would die when they can just maintain the status quo indefinitely? www.thesaturdaypaper.com.au/share/8cd14b...

What would happen in a China–Taiwan war
There is today only one question that matters for Taiwan’s security: will the United States defend the island if it comes under attack from China?

One of my favorite cases of someone being Wrong on the Internet was a very earnest, very confused vegan who was telling people how cruel honey is; and it eventually turned out they thought honey was made by putting bees in a centrifuge and spinning them around until they threw up.

You gotta just not care. I think so many people allow a small and vocal audience to shape what they say and do bc being intellectually honest and consistent in your beliefs is costly. But at the end of the day why have a platform if you won't stick to your guns

Very much the thesis of @deadbunyipsociety.bsky.social recent episodes on blackface in Australia, only way to stop Australians is to publicly shame them for the practice.

to say nothing of the fact that so many of our laws actually *advantage* small business. Half the reason regulators go after major corporates is because they can get the funding to do so, its not because big corporates are more likely to break the law (the opposite is probably true)

TiredLiam @tiredliam.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
That's obviously not me saying ever concentrating power in the hands of smaller number of corporations is great, but someone think of the petit bourgeois is such a funny take

Man I generally like Deep Cut's stuff but this is some bullshit, lol. SME's in Australia are usually the worst offenders for tax compliance, wage underpayment and all other manner of shitfuckery. It's easier to hold large corporates to account for obvious reasons www.deepcutnews.com/p/small-busi...

Why the decline of small business is bad for workers
Corporations are gobbling up a growing share of the workforce – and eroding workers’ power.

Now I tend to think there are a small number of people who do need to be confined somewhere (probably not a prison) for the primary reason of stopping them from hurting others, probably in line with the Scandinavian model but with more emphasis on a therapeutic approach

In a similar way Australian society tries to mythologise WWI veterans and I’ll always remember a lad in my class (now famous) getting a weeks detention for changing the section of his school issued diary “for those who paid the supreme sacrifice” to “for those who paid for the supreme pizza”

Further, I contend your honour, that each stanza concludes with the refrain, "isn't it ironic" and given the fundamental conceit of the song, this clearly rhetorical device is, itself, ironic.
