This is is a thoughtful post, agreed, but it is missing one crucial element. At least some of the people espousing this racist nonsense are doing it with full knowledge its bollocks. The statement assumes people are acting in good faith, and that is naïve at best.

I went down a rabbit hole on this, and apparently these are relatively common names in Peru (!) and this dude is left leaning (and is the mayor of a town of about 700 people or so). So, less a changing-name-in-adoration-of-fascism, and more a weird-naming-of-children-after-fascists 🤷🏻‍♀️.

It’s considered a sensible strategy to supply notices etc, as it minimises risk to individuals doing recordings. DPA2018 isn’t prescriptive saying you must do this ‘at a minimum’ in the above context, however. I suspect this fess was a long view troll to get strangers arguing about data protection

UK GDPR sets out personal/household exemptions. You can argue the above ‘fess sits outside this, of course, but it’s a grey area, and probably depends a lot w/ what you do with the info.

Well for what it’s worth, before I got an ADHD diagnosis& meds I frequently wanted to curl up& die and struggled to work. Since I’ve had meds I rarely want to curl up& die, seem to be flourishing in work and got a masters degree. Correlation ain’t causation, but the pattern sure is compelling. 🤷🏻‍♀️

My approach is to declare that I like the thing they are raising money to stop. Raising funds against knife crime? “I’m pro knives actually.” Protecting cats? “I think cats are evil.” I’m not suggesting this is morally great, but having a prepared response that makes then shut up is helpful.

It's telling that men would rather try to invent tech to replace humans' role in caregiving than step up as equal partners in parenting. Telling, that is, in that it shows how financial capitalism and patriarchy work together to dissuade men from doing "unprofitable" labor, like the work of care.

Right! The expectation is for footballers to be so crap at this sort of thing. Whilst I don’t want to hand out prizes for just being baseline-decent, it also is powerful (I think) when someone who you expect to be a Lad™️ is publicly not (especially in a way that doesn’t feel performative).

I’m pretty sure data protection act only covers processing of data in relation to commercial/business activity. So, quite possibly this scenario doesn’t fall into that.
