I can’t deal right now with the corruption, grifting and cruelty bombarding us on a daily basis. So I am losing myself tonight reading about the Green River Killer in Washington state. I am not sure how reading about a serial killer seems less benign than what is happening to my beloved country.

I spent much of my research career investigating wood decay and chemical preservation. Representations of utility poles, cross arms and transformers with utility workers hit me in the gut. And watching Bad Bunny climb those metal handholds. Wow. Maria is still hurting PR. My country failed them.

I currently cannot join any active protests. But I do financially support several public radio broadcasters in Oregon. OPB, and KLCC and KRVM, out of Eugene KRVM broadcasts Indian Time on Thursday nights. Stream it if you are not local. The variety of Native American music is captivating.

Will this carnage ever end? When I was growing up in Eastern Kansas every pickup had a gun rack behind the seat. And during hunting season the rack held a rifle or shotgun. Those trucks were unlocked and parked in the high school parking lot. Mine too.

Kansas, like many of the perceived “Red” states has much more complicated political leanings than most people know. Kansas is also continuously denigrated as being “flat”. Eastern Kansas bridges between the Ozark Mountains and the short grass prairie. Get off I-70 and travel the dirt roads.
