On the eve of its second birthday in DC, after being forced to end a 20-year run in Shanghai in 2018, I write about Jifeng Books. It's about decades of change in and between China and the US, cultural production under capitalism and authoritarian politics, and ringing the bells that still can ring.

How has the rise of Asian popular culture in the twenty-first century expanded our understanding of global Asias? In what ways might media representations empower or disempower Asian and Asian American and Pacific Islander individuals, as well as those belonging to other diasporic communities?
Popular Culture Across Global Asias: Identity, Diaspora, and Representation
In this panel, we explore the complexities of and intersections between popular culture, identity, and representation across “Global Asias,” broadly defined in terms of geographical regions and discourses as well as larger transnational relations and imaginations. How has the rise of Asian popular culture in the twenty-first century expanded our understanding of global Asias? In what ways might media representations empower or disempower Asian and Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) individuals, as well as those belonging to other diasporic communities? Since the second half of the twentieth century, increased and easier exchange of popular culture and media have helped Asian diasporic communities maintain closer ties with communities in their homelands. The emergence of global Asian studies further provided conceptual and methodological possibilities for bridging popular media across transnational Asias. This panel centers how media and popular cultures can enable solidarity, identity formation, and community building through such forms of representations, as well as how the fluidity of popular culture as a field of scholarship intersects with Asia-focused area studies.

This discussion welcomes scholars, activists, and artists to share their latest work (whether in the beginning stages or near completion) that touch upon (multi)media representations of Asian, AAPI, and Asian diasporic bodies that challenge or reaffirm traditional frameworks of area studies.

Possible topics for submission may include but are not limited to:

Feminist embodiment and gendered bodies in media and popular cultures
LGBTQ+ representation and social movements in media and popular cultures
Race/ethnicity and representation in media and popular cultures
Intersectional identities, intimacies, and communities in gaming, dating apps, and social media platforms

How does the framework of Asia contribute to Indigenous Studies, and what does or can Indigeneity mean within Asian contexts? What happens when the concept of Indigeneity travels beyond and does not map neatly onto well-known settler colonial paradigms developed around Western environments?
Remapping Indigeneity: Belonging and Identity in Asia, Past & Present
North American and Oceanic contexts often dominate our scholarly and popular perceptions of Indigeneity and Indigenous Studies more broadly. Images of colonial dispossession, marginalization, and violence that somehow feel “familiar” or “typical” can color or even limit our understandings of these crucial histories. How does the framework of Asia contribute to Indigenous Studies, and what does or can Indigeneity mean within Asian contexts? This panel invites speakers to consider how Asia and Asian Studies impacts notions of identity, belonging, community, and more. What happens when the concept of Indigeneity travels beyond and does not map neatly onto well-known settler colonial paradigms developed around places like the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and other Western environments? What insights can Indigeneity in Asian contexts contribute to scholarship, activism/resistance, the reevaluation of historical narratives, or even the fundamental conceptual vocabulary applied to Indigenous research? We welcome papers that address comparative perspectives within and beyond Asia, historical and transtemporal approaches, and other topics that have bearing on the challenges of our contemporary moment. We welcome submissions on these and related topics:

comparative perspectives on Indigeneity within and beyond Asia
transhistorical and transtemporal approaches that trace how Indigenous identities, communities, and epistemologies transform across multiple ruptures
the conceptual friction that emerges when key concepts in Indigenous studies, such as the idea of land-based sovereignty, are tested in Asian contexts
the political significance of the absence or refusal of the “Indigenous” label
methodological experiments and ethical negotiations with what it means to research, represent, and advocate alongside Indigenous communities in Asian contexts

This. The frustration of working on (women and) Christianity in #HongKong is that most studies simply praise the church for “liberating” Chinese women. The church in early colonial days preached conservative Victorian values that were just as patriarchal as the “Chinese customs” it condemned.

Pedagogy Under Threat (in the U.S. and Beyond) - Sponsored by AAS Diversity and Equity Committee
Sat, March 14, 2026 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM PDT Location: VCC, Room 212
Over the last decade, higher education has experienced a disconcerting variety of threats which have taken a variety of forms at institutions globally, include but are not limited to restrictions on academic freedom, budget cuts and the adjunctification of instruction, the elimination of entire departments, surveillance, and much more. In recent years, the United States in particular has been a site of further and accelerated existential attacks on the infrastructure of the humanities, area studies, higher education as a whole, and students whose identities or activism make them vulnerable, destabilizing the foundations of critical pedagogy and rejecting the necessity of diversity, equity, and justice for educators and students alike. The reckless and often extractive push towards new and little-understood technologies like generative AI without consideration of their influence on teaching, research, or student development further hinders instructors of every discipline and background. Finally, the militarization of campus security, including intensive surveillance technology, has restricted free speech.
With repercussions far beyond North American academic circles, these trends both echo and resonate with the experiences of colleagues and institutions around the world. These targeted forms of disempowerment have effects well beyond US borders, necessitating that we both raise awareness of these issues and collaborate on strategic paths forward.
