For those aware of Netiwit's views & previous campaigns it should be no surprise how even in the midst of his own case he show's transnational solidarity in his piece. These two section really highlight it He gives South Korean's who fought hard for Conscientious objection to be recognised props too
This is not happening only in Thailand. Across the region, young people are again being asked to surrender their bodies and futures to states that speak the language of national security.
In Burma/Myanmar, the military junta has enforced conscription while it continues its war against its own people. In Cambodia, the new draft law also shows how quickly governments can turn young people's lives into instruments of state power.
I want to say clearly: young people in Cambodia and Burma should also have the right to refuse conscription when it becomes a tool of dictatorship, fear, or war-making.
Our solidarity should not stop at national borders. Thai youth, Cambodian youth, Burmese youth - none of us should be treated merely as bodies for the state.I also think of my friend Joshua Wong, the great Hong Kong activist and serious Christian who is now in jail. Sometimes I feel I have not done enough for Hong Kong democracy while I continue to live freely and happily outside.
Maybe if I also face jail in Thailand, I can say to him in the future that I understand a little more. This is also solidarity - with Joshua Wong, with Hong Kong, with Thai freedom activists, and with all people without freedom.Look at South Korea. Its recognition of conscientious objection did not come easily. It came because many people who believed in peace and conscience refused military service. Many ended up in prison. Not one or two, but hundreds and thousands throughout modern history. That
suffering helped create the ground for change.
