I'm so glad the art galleries have been reinstated at the IWM, so many striking but devastating paintings there. I remember being so moved by my visit on one of my first solo trips to London. Now joined by film and photography, which warrant a separate visit I think, + a temp exhib on London at war.
Large WWI battlefield paintings by Wyndham Lewis and Nash (John, I think). The Menin Road, by Paul Nash. Landscape, desolate tree trunks in the mud foregrounded by a huge water-filled bomb crater. Norah Neilson Gray, The Scottish Women's Hospital. Patients lie in bed along the left wall of a cloister, under red blankets, with nurses in blue and white standing by. Uniformed men stand on the right. Almost all look at the artist/viewer. Very large, long horizontal painting of WWI soldiers blinded by mustard gas and blindfolded, by John Singer Sargent. Some marching, each hanging onto the one in front, many lying on the floor in the foreground.

I felt that it was more spectacular than necessarily meaningful, but the Anish Kapoor show is a brilliant and mind-blowing experience. This piece looks beautiful, but then you get close to it and your own reflection attacks you, and then you get closer and a psychedelic vortex consumes you.
Purple concave dish that becomes deep red at the edges, very reflective, hanging on a white wall.
