I need to shelve my 'things you have to live in London to see' list and get packing, but did two today: Bazalgette's pumping station at Crossness, and Nash's rotunda for Geo IV - once a party pad at the bottom of Regent’s St, then an artillery museum by Woolwich Barracks for 180 years. Now: nothing.
Tall, rusty iron arches on Corinthian columns with an iron octagonal lightwell in the background. Half of the hall for the giant pumps has been left unrestored, the other re-painted as the Victorians had it. Full view of the painted iron octagonal frame within the lightwell, about the height of a house, in green, red and gold with complex patterns between its columns. All fenced off, the body of the rotunda is initially obscured by the curator's building (1810, I think). Its roof is tented, like some of the peaks on Nash's Royal Pavilion in Brighton (where I used to work!). Full view, with yellow brick curtain wall, small-paned arched windows and the tall tented roof. Directly opposite on the quiet back street is a large mid-century estate of flats.

My gut reaction to this image is the one I'm not going to say. However, two other things: Nigella makes Noel Fielding looked tanned, and, can she not have a word with him about putting eyeliner *inside* his eyes?! Such a rookie error for a goth of his age.
Noel Fielding standing over a seated Nigella Lawson, his hand on her shoulder. He's in a graphic black shirt, she a leopard print denim jacket. There's Union Jack bunting, so it isn't all goth.

It's #WorldArchitectureDay and architecture brings me a great deal of joy so, in the absence of much time, here are some randomly chosen snaps of places that have rocked my boat in the last couple of years.
Publicly inaccessible Nelson Staircase at Somerset House. A bit like Spaghetti Junction, in Regency stairs. Panelled passageway crammed with barristers' coats of arms (just the male ones, obviously) at the Middle Temple Inn (I think it was!). Coventry's Tudor-style town hall, in the Christmas mist. The Byzantine-style former Middlesex Hospital chapel in Fitzrovia, now a sometime exhibition venue.

It doesn't take much with me at the moment, but this has really moved me.
Eric Morecambe listed as one of the writers of new series The Reluctant Vampire, adapted from his 1980s children's book. BBC 1 tonight at 6.40, a slot dear Eric would be very happy with I think.

Fifth and finest, in my opinion, though only by a hair's breadth. If you think you know what The Damned are from New Rose, or Eloise, try this: melodic psych, if it was a runaway train.

Victorian Gothic folly in the grounds of Park Hill, the Neoclassical mansion in Streatham where Henry Tate lived. It's still private but we also got to peek into the outbuilding that was his gallery, there. Now part of a house, which the grounds are actually full of, with this their communal garden!
Stone turret and pointed archway, surrounded by mature trees. Arrow slit and small arched window cavity from the inside. Boulders of Victorian fortified concrete (left) made up a giant rockery. A Georgian bridge (right) has a painted iron balustrade with a semicircular pattern. More boulders, surrounded by ferns and trees (which, somehow, have grown out of the tops of some of them).

I couldn't be more delighted with these little buggers, especially given how I got them. I've coveted the type for ages and lost one in a recent auction, so hit eBay. Both of these were there, separately, in the States - and both of my low bids were accepted. Best of all, once washed, they do match!
A pair of Victorian Staffordshire cats, white with black markings and gold collars. About 3.75" tall.

Labour sent a leaflet with an AI generated picture of the Minet Library & a bunch of false claims on the back. Campaigning is one thing – this is open contempt for residents. Labour were in the meeting where Greens cancelled the cuts Labour planned for our libraries. They know this leaflet is false.
Fact-check poster debunking a Labour campaign leaflet, showing the leaflet in the center with green arrows and handwritten-style labels marking claims as "true'ish", "weird claim", "fake petition" and "total lie", and a bold verdict reading "VERDICT: LABOUR LIED TO RESIDENTS".

Bryan not the only style icon in there.
A tall man in the background, also in a long Mac, along with a Trilby hat, shirt and slim tie, and pale trousers and two-tone V-neck. Standing with hand in pocket and side profile, very much like a catalogue model.

And so I have left Sir John Soane's Museum. With huge sadness; I can't really believe I worked there, & I can't believe I no longer will. It's beautiful, pioneering, fascinating, gloomthy & staffed by truly lovely and stunningly well-informed ppl. But I can't urge you to go, there's already a queue.
A view of Soane's Museum area, or Plaister Room, now known as the Dome. Every surface is filled with ancient objects, or plaster casts of them, for the education of his architecture students. Sunlight through the ochre glass skylight illuminates one of a set of Roman cinerary urns, once owned by the Adam brothers. My copyright.
