#ManyLanguagesChallengeOfTheMonth Citation practices suffer from systemic biases that can distort the academic record. Researchers often rely on a narrow canon of highly cited publications as cognitive shortcuts for identifying authoritative work, a phenomenon related to the Matthew Effect.

oh this is wonderful! and completely resonates with my discomfort about how folks just throw cluster analysis at anything these days without even trying to derive/articulate necessary auxiliary assumptions

A two-dimensional scatterplot showing a three-cluster solution.

Caption: "Figure 2: A visualisation of a Latent Profile Analysis fit. Such visualisations may help readers appreciate that the clusters aren’t nicely separated and that the researchers’ notion of clusters may not correspond to their own."Table of contents:

Refresher: What is cluster analysis?
What are the clusters for?
What clusters, exactly?
Does the pipeline work?
What does the solution look like?
When running follow-up analyses, how is the uncertainty in the cluster assignments taken into account?
Was it worth it?

...If I decide to use replic* prominently (i.e. in title, abstract, keywords), I more deliberately use it to flag a certain kind of empirical study. While in in-text discussions, people throw the term around for anything, most commonly to refer to confirming a vaguely defined quant relationship

Big Team Science for language science: opportunities and challenges
Abstract: The present paper advocates for incorporating Big Team Science practices into the language sciences. Big Team Science is a promising mode of collaborative research in which top-down coordination directs efforts by a large number of researchers from different institutions towards a common scientific goal. The redistribution of resources and division of labor enabled by Big Team Science may enable researchers to increase methodological rigor, systematically explore claims across a wider sample of languages, and to diversify both the languages studied and the researchers engaged. However, implementing Big Team Science practices is not without challenges, some of which are unique to the language sciences. We suggest strategies and best practices for adapting to these challenges, including theoretical and methodological pluralism, variation in conditions among data collection sites, and navigating a trade-off between maximizing methodological rigor and ability to engage with the most inclusive, typologically broad language samples.

Two clinics. Same hospital. A 5x difference in deaths. Here's why. 🧵1/5 In the 1840s, nearly 1 in 10 mothers died after giving birth at Vienna General Hospital. Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis figured out why — and the fix was simple: doctors needed to wash their hands.

It's a prisoner dilemma though. If I encourage my students to be disruptive and do things too differently, they will disadvantage themselves when evaluated by people with more conservative expectations. Unless a critical mass is on board, the individual will not be incentivised to take risks.

As you say, we are not UX/UI designers. It requires user research and is a complex skill. That's why we have these designers and why many large companies put them first when developing a digital product. Let's not pretend we can use an LLM to vibe code a good digital product. We can't.

OSF is an example of how saving money by not dedicating more time for a UX designer nukes the product. I find it *unusable* (!) I would say, look into industry to learn a lesson, but alas, many start-ups put developers on a pedestal while utterly undervaluing UX design.

This is one of history's most powerful lessons about data communication: → Data are only as good as their presentation → Even life-saving evidence can be ignored if it's buried in noise → Visualization isn't decoration — it's the difference between insight and information 🧵4/5

A thing that professionals in industry do, does not work well with academics in my experience: Using PM tools for task tracking. People seem so tool-fatigued that nobody uses the tool. I've heard from some that they had success with Trello, Miro and co, so I wonder what they did differently.
