wouldn't be a day collecting data on an internet subculture without a random antisemitic jump scare.

Exciting Friday night: data everyone thought was gone is actually still available if you know where to look. The Internet truly is forever.

Being on the north side of campus means I get to have lunch at the good dumpling place. But I forgot the good dumpling place takes a long time to make them special for each order, and I have to teach soon. 😬

What did these people do before? Were they content in their lanes, only writing things worth their time? Were they actually putting in the work and just stopped?

Latest news: 2 of my sociology colleagues, John Levi Martin & Geoff Wodtke & I each wrote separate reviews of the Vanderbilt-Wash U Report on Sociology by A. Rubin. For my brief opinion and links to all 3 reviews, see this blogpost: scatter.wordpress.com/2026/09/19/g...

Campus AI leadership say their new tool is "working very well" because "we have seen tremendous uptake" of it. Love when the quality metric is actually popularity.

Most people have no idea how much international students are the lifeblood of higher education. But they’re about to learn. Sigh.

At least where I got my PhD, if I wasn't sure what I found, how it worked, if it was useful or significant, nobody pretended I accomplished anything.

Fascinating interview - Turkle basically pretends her work from the 80s and 90s doesn't exist, leans into psychology and "hard wiring" rather than her old sociological / ethnographic approaches.

Most weekends the local fire department parks a big shiny ladder truck by the grocery store and then just hangs out and chats with families that have small kids. Adorable use of public services.

do any of my theory / sociology heads know the story of what killed functionalism? not *why* they critiqued functionalism; I know that. I want to know who took down parsons in the pages of the ASR or theory and society or whatever?? no one ever cites a piece or anything when talking about it

It really is wild the extent to which "my AI did it" has been accepted as license for things we'd otherwise consider unacceptable.

Anyway, the "what if we're not smart enough?" crowd might be onto something.

The fear, if they believe what they say, is intelligence itself. To be unable to anticipate, and thus helpless to stop, an intellectually superior being. By definition they can't give a practical scenario, because they worry they're too dumb to imagine and survive whatever it thinks up.

I recall also the case of E.O. Wilson, who kept his public writing polite and didn't openly say these things. When he died and his personal papers came out, of course he had been privately endorsing and assisting extreme race science people all along.

Lol he promised to study "the future of liberalism," by which he presumably meant how it's bad, and the university is holding him to the letter of that and saying he wasn't hired to talk about illiberal things like his racist agenda.
