This is a big deal for me and, as I've said a thousand times on here, I think the doomer-narrative of nothing being a win bc Trump and his people lie and cheat is dangerous. They lose. A lot. And rightfully so because they're doing illegal things. And taking those wins is important for democracy.

I'm really glad that Code Switch included this part of my interview, because I think these are the points that so often get lost in the discussion of trans panic and why the WNBA might be an ideal target for those anti-trans groups to latch onto. www.npr.org/2026/09/15/n...
We're talking about actual bigotry and the belief that this group of people shouldn't have, like, the same human rights as another group. It legitimizes them. And so the WNBA is a big platform for them to be able to do that. But I think what's actually really insidious about being the target is that transphobia is rooted in white supremacist ideas of who is allowed to be a woman and what a woman should look like. Those beliefs have, you know, negatively impacted Black and brown and non-Western women throughout history.

So what you have is a league in the WNBA that is full of Black women, 7-foot-tall women, masculine women, women who don't fit kind of the traditional markers of conventional white Western ideas of womanhood. And so I don't think it's surprising that transphobic ideas around the acceptable kind of woman are coming and impacting this league.

And I think the last piece that I will say is, I think, in some ways, the lack of visibility that the league had for a lot of years really protected it. Like, it wasn't as successful as it should have been because of racism and homophobia and misogyny. And once it becomes successful, the flip side of that is it really does become a different kind of victim of those ideas. And the fact that you have a league that is all women, predominantly Black women, largely queer women who have been successful and they don't need men to do it, and their product is not necessarily for men. I think that's a threat to the status quo. And so it's not just about protecting women's sports. It's actually about dismantling them from the inside.

Disheartening to see. The system is failing students *and* school personnel. Dedicated staff are doing their best with what they're given. And what they're given is a pittance and nowhere near what is needed to support students, both in resources and allocation.

"This election is about the threat of trans kids" is the worst possible messaging for Dems yet so many candidates are leaning into it. No voter will flip R->D over it. Low-info voters read this as "you're focused on bullshit that doesn't affect me" while the base reads this as "you're an asshole."

...Assumption #4 has been driving me batshit, yet no one seems to realize it: if you're worried trans ppl might potentially harm your Dem candidate's chances, then YOUR CANDIDATE MADE A BAD DECISION! so why not join us in trying to get them to reverse position? juliaserano.medium.com/on-democrats...
screenshot from linked-to essay that reads:
Assumption #4: The elephant in the room that no one is talking about
There is a striking disconnect between Talarico, Turek, et al. — who have clearly made a political calculation that abandoning trans rights will help them more than it will hurt them in this election — and the many cisgender liberals I’ve encountered online who are absolutely freaking out over the possibility that trans people’s critiques and protests will ultimately tank said candidates.
Both of these things cannot simultaneously be true!
If you think your favorite candidate enacted the correct political strategy, then there is no reason to berate trans people for protesting it, as those protests should already be baked into your candidate’s calculations. So why are you berating trans people then? (Unless, of course, you enjoy berating trans people just for the sake of it.)
Alternatively, if you think trans people *are* capable of tanking your favorite candidate via our criticisms and protests, doesn’t that imply that your candidate (and their consultants and strategists) totally fucked up in their political calculations here? And if they did fuck up, shouldn’t you be reaching out and complaining to *them* (rather than berating trans people), in the hope that they might reverse their bad decision?

Fascists are malicious people that want to see the world burn, believing they are the chosen few that will thrive among the ashes. Offering minoritized people up to the fascists is acting as if the fascistic impulse is ever sated. It's not.

Saying "Republicans are worse" is just a given. We *expect* more from Dems. The consultant class is forever chasing polls instead of changing them. When a fascist movement takes aim at a minority group, capitulating is just pathetic. People respect principles, not conceding to a moral panic

Talarico giving *any* credence to what Republicans are spewing is the source of the problem. By conceding anything, he adds credibility to the inferno. That's the problem. Saying Rs would be worse isn't saying anything new. We expect more from Dems and therein lies the critique

"They"? What? What's fun about Republicans is that they get to smear an entire political group as responsible for one random person's actions, but they themselves will deny any responsibility for the actions of their own deranged president or the racist billionaire who has bought them all.
They killed Charlie Kirk—one year ago today.

Then they spiked the football, openly celebrating his assassination.

A year later, they’re planning parties to savor that horrible tragedy.

Really is striking now many centrist pundits just cannot fathom that their beliefs about DEI and "woke" are solely based on vibes and the work of other reactionaries. It's the "repeat something enough and people will believe it." Glad Bouie took the opportunity to call this out

All of this tracks. Most white journalists cant conceive of white nationalism as anything but fringe, so they report the open white supremacy of the MAGA movement as something else (economic anxiety!) as they did with the tea party. Tough to admit that it's just the same old basic white nationalism.
