Tim Mathews @timmathews.bsky.social · 25/09/2026The APFT was a decades-long mistake. You need to test soldiers’ ability to lift and drag and carry heavy things in a controlled environment before you deploy them to do so in a chaotic environment. Eventually, the Army realized that and rightfully scrapped the APFT. We are better as a result. 110
Tim Mathews @timmathews.bsky.social · 25/09/2026We’re still not as fit as we could be, but we’re not so one-dimensional and weak anymore. Soldiers actually lift weights now during morning PRT, and carry and drag heavy stuff. It’s no longer just distance runs and high-rep bodyweight exercises. It’s actually an attempt to be physically ready. 100
Tim Mathews @timmathews.bsky.social · 25/09/2026Giant bureaucracies often get things wrong, but credit to where it is due - the Army largely got this right. We were a force where it was not only okay, but encouraged, to be a bunch of weak, bony-armed losers who could run fast but couldn’t deadlift 200 lbs. 100
Tim Mathews @timmathews.bsky.social · 25/09/2026I’m not sure how the topic came up, but we were discussing the change from the APFT to ACFT to AFT, and the resultant culture change around fitness. The test is not ideal, nor is the excessive focus on the test (a mere proxy) instead of actual readiness. But it is a huge improvement over the APFT. 100
Tim Mathews @timmathews.bsky.social · 24/09/2026Not a fan of this. If you run for office, do it as Mr. or Ms., not as Pastor. I don’t see how a megachurch pastor can separate his position from his candidacy. The problem isn’t injecting faith into politics. The problem is this pulls the church further into politics and distracts from the mission. 030

Tim Mathews @timmathews.bsky.social · 20/09/2026Had the minaret not been there, we would not have built an elevated position. We would have simply done something else to protect the route. Just a random thought that came to mind today about the utility of snipers and drones on urban terrain. 130
Tim Mathews @timmathews.bsky.social · 20/09/2026When I was in Samarra, Iraq, we put snipers on the spiral minaret to overwatch routes in and out of the city. This was to deter and prevent emplacement of IEDs and other hostile acts. We also tried launching Raven drones from the minaret. That was no more useful than launching them from elsewhere. 140

Tim Mathews @timmathews.bsky.social · 19/09/2026That’s not what this memo says. It simply explains the difficulty of diagnosing the cause of testosterone deficiency when symptoms can arise from behavioral factors common in the population being screened. The prescribed intervention will likely be lifestyle change rather than hormone replacement. 110
Tim Mathews @timmathews.bsky.social · 19/09/2026I had this problem in school. It always annoyed me. I would forget to turn in homework or, in most cases, simply not do it. And it was part of our grade. So I’d ace tests, but get a B or C for the class. Isn’t the grade supposed to reflect mastery of the subject? 020
Tim Mathews @timmathews.bsky.social · 18/09/2026There’s also nothing stopping units at, say, BDE or BDE-equivalent, from developing their own readiness tests that are nested within mission essential tasks. On the other hand, some will probably come up with very dumb ideas that break people. 000
Tim Mathews @timmathews.bsky.social · 18/09/2026The best idea I’ve heard is to have 12-15 events that test many aspects of fitness - strength, power, aerobic/anaerobic/muscular endurance, across several movement patterns - but only test 3-4, selected at random. That addresses the “train to the test” problem but also keeps it logistically light. 210
Tim Mathews @timmathews.bsky.social · 18/09/2026There is now so much emphasis on proxies for physical fitness that we’ve lost focus on actual physical readiness. Next we’ll probably train grip strength on the assumption that grip strength is a longevity marker so improving grip strength will make us live longer. 100
