This is a bleak but important read from @ippr.org www.ippr.org/articles/the... It's difficult to see hope in here, but there is some, in how society creates a context for CYP to develop agency. "Agency is not a characteristic. It is a skill that needs to be developed, nurtured and practised".

Worlds will be more exciting without Pog. This is a fact, not an opinion. If you enjoy boring long-range solo victories masked in a cloak of 'witnessing greatness' well that's fine. But it's not exciting. We don't know what is going to happen, which is more exciting than knowing.

At a climate aware training day today we were advised to cut down on emails because of their carbon impact. Ok, yes. But that’s such a massive distractor from the main issue: ENERGY AND TRANSPORT POLICY Not emails. Sigh.

Amidst all the talk of England’s #PISA achievements, shouldn’t we also be talking about the representativeness of the population sample? CYP with EHCPs were significantly under represented (non participation rate 7% vs expected rate 1.4%).

Keats argued for the value of negative capability, being “capable of being in uncertainties, mysteries, doubts, without any irritable reaching after fact and reason” Such an important idea for #edpsychs but also more widely in our world of divisive politics. theconversation.com/john-keats-c...

Doubt can be uncomfortable. It is often tempting to jump to conclusions. But Keats counsels otherwise.

On my bike ride tonight in semi-rural/suburban outskirts of Winchester I started counting how many cars were single occupancy. 124/146. That’s 85%. It would have been 90% if it hadn’t been for 6 cars coming out of an office complex probably car pooling. And we wonder why we have #congestion.

We were looking today in a session at @suedpsy.bsky.social at eliciting and reporting child voice. This quote really struck home hard. Eliciting ≠ reporting ≠ hearing ≠acting. #edpsychs
Quotation from Ogle, J., Vincent, S., & Hawkes, M. (2022):
If we seriously mean to improve the life conditions of children we must, as a minimum precondition, establish reporting systems in which they are heard themselves as well as reported on by others (Qvortup, 1990, p. 94)

Yes. I can’t understand how the conversation about SEND doesn’t focus on mainly on the breadth and flexibility of the regular curriculum. As you say, what we’re having is instead a (hopefully kind) conversation about the cyp that don’t fit.

I predict that more resources into exisiting SEND orthodoxies will drive more demand and even further overwhelm schools. There will be less consistency and predictability in schools, which will make quality first teaching harder to achieve. This will also drive more demand for specialist help.

Yes. Just like Kurt Lewin said that behaviour is a function of the interaction between person and environment, neither does SEND exist purely within the child/young person.

They say that everyone has at least one book in them. In my case, it turns out to be made by #crochet
Cover of crochet book. Shows a small bear hiding behind a bush, with a fir tree behind it, and sun in the sky. Crochet book, spread open to show two pages. Left hand page shows fish jumping from a river as it passes through a woodland meadow. Right hand page shows bear playing hide and seek behind a tree. In the top of the tree is part of a hidden bird, and there’s a flap on the bottom corner hiding something…who knows what?Crochet book spread open to show to show a double page. Left hand page shows flowers growing and being pollinated by bees. Right hand page shows the baby bear investigating a bee hive from which two bees have flown towards a flower. The rear cover of the crochet book showing little bear’s day. He’s all snuggled up at night time in the woods with Mumma bear cuddling him with her arm. Stars twinkle in the night sky.
