Just back from a superb holiday in West Wales. As per usual, I spent my time shying away from pretty sunshiny photos. The moment the sea mist rolled in, I got my camera out. Llangrannog beach, Cardigan Bay, August 2026
Distant figures are seen gathering on a grey day at the beach.

I was recently given a powered height-adjustable desk and I love it! At least for the reason that when I touch preset 4 it rises from 73cm - 110cm in a way that reminds me of the volcano doors opening in a James Bond film. All I need now is a white cat and a shark tank beneath my feet.

I'm just back from a fantastic and entertaining audience with James Ellis and Roger Deakins hosted by Topping & Co bookstore at Komedia in Bath. It was a sell-out evening, a packed theatre, to hear about their collaborative lives in film.

RIP Penelope Keith, legend of a gentler age. I took this photo of Penelope circa '89 during a sit-down interview with a local reporter when she was performing at Theatre Royal, Bath. This frame was never published, but I always liked it.
Black and white portrait of Penelope Keith circa 1989 taken during an interview with a local reporter at Theatre Royal, Bath. We can't see much in the way of foreground as it's a tightly-cropped portrait. Penelope is pulling a face with her mouth in what can only be described as a thoughtful frown while she considers her answer to a question. Her eyebrows are raised, her eyes wide. Her hair is styled in thick waves. She is wearing a jacket of Edinburgh wool weave with a black lapel and there is a small metal broach on one side, the design of which is hard to discern.

Seeing froglets emerge from our pond gives me such joy.
Three or four froglets, no bigger than a finger nail, sit on green duckweed after emerging from a garden pond. Their cuteness is astonishing.

Make bread not war. 6th loaf baked today. I may need help.
A large loaf of hand-shaped bread with deep slashes across its top sits on a wire cooling rack on top of a black glass induction hob. White wall tiles behind and an orange utensil pot is just visible in the background towards the top-left of the picture.

Make bread, not war. I'm revisiting my bread-making technique. Shaping is still my weak point, but I'll get there.
Three rustic-looking loaves of homemade bread cool on a wire rack on top of a black glass induction hob. One loaf is larger than the other two. It has a single slash down its centre, while the two smaller loaves have multiple diagonal slashes.

Periodic friendly nudge : If you're a photographer who shares their work on Instagram, I encourage you to try and stop doing it. Meta are demonstrably a deeply unethical company, and sharing work there just perpetuates IGs standing as the defacto calling card for photographers.

From my project What Happened Here. Scattered pencils and pens. This one didn't make it into the book. Copies of the resulting book are available from my website, either hard back or soft cover. Both are limited edition: www.takeagander.co.uk/-/galleries/books
We are looking at the ground, a view of pale grey asphalt with a lose scattering of coloured pens, pencils and small pieces of plastic on it. The daylight is soft with the hint of a shadow of a nearby tree casting some shade across portions of the ground.

From my book What Happened Here. January 2018 - Teenagers hanging out in Hobo Hut. Copies of What Happened Here are available from my website, either hard back or soft cover. Both are limited edition: www.takeagander.co.uk/-/galleries/books 1/2
Three young people (two males, one female) are cramped together in a small shed. We can only see them from their necks down and we can see one is lighting a cigarette in his cupped hands, the female in the middle is wearing a fur or faux fur coat and checking her smart phone and the male on the right is also looking at his phone. To the left of the image in the foreground is a plastic chair with a hole burned through the seat and it has a packet of cigarettes on it, plus some roll-up filters and filter papers. There is some kind of large metal service pipe, maybe for water, between the male on the left and the female in the middle.

From my book What Happened Here. January 2018 - A party at Alby's place. Hard back or soft cover copies available. Both are limited edition: www.takeagander.co.uk/-/galleries/books 1/2
It's late evening in January so the sky is dark blue, we can see a single street lamp illuminated and some leafless trees. In the foreground to the left of the picture, a man is spinning fire sticks which make two bright circles as the camera shutter speed was slow. Beyond him we see a caravan under the street lamp, scrap wood and a bonfire with hooded figures standing around. They are a mixture of adults and pre-teen children.

From my book What Happened Here. January 2018 - Hobo Hut This small shed became a place of refuge for youngsters looking to chat, check their phones and smoke. It had various names, but Hobo Hut or Herbal Hut (because of the weed consumed there) were the commonest. 1/2
A landscape of former industrial buildings. In the far distance we can see trees and town buildings on the horizon, then a little nearer are some low factory buildings. In the middle distance is scrub wasteland with rubble and rubbish on the ground. To the centre-right of the image is a small brick shed and through the doorway we can just make out the figure of a boy illuminated by a light inside. Leading up to the shed from the right of the picture is a low concrete wall covered in scrawled graffiti.

From my book What Happened Here. May 2017 - Boy in abandoned building. One of the few remaining buildings on the Saxonvale site was regularly visited by kids looking for something to break or burn. Book available here: www.takeagander.co.uk/-/galleries/...
Black and white photo taken inside a derelict building. We're looking through a doorway which has graffiti on the walls either side of it, through to another doorway which is lit from an unseen window in the space beyond. The silhouetted figure of a young boy is seen striding away through that second door towards what looks like a wooden staircase. We can see some rubble on the floor and more graffiti on the walls.

From my book What Happened Here, kids play in an abandoned building. At this stage the site had been empty for 17 years. It's now almost 26 years, and it's still awaiting development. Book available here: www.takeagander.co.uk/-/galleries/...
Black and white photo of a vandalised indoor space with graffiti on the walls, broken windows and ivy tumbling in from the right. There is dust, rubble and bits of ceiling on the floor. In the foreground stands a boy, hands in pockets, wearing a backwards baseball cap. He is in silhouette as he watches his two friends who are further off in a side room as they stamp out the embers of a small fire they'd started. They are dressed in jeans and hoodies and one is carrying a rucksack.

This applies to UK too. I've counted just two dandelions in our garden so far, but I know they'll be popping up everywhere soon enough! I used to pull the seed heads to keep numbers down, but it's pointless. Just let nature have its way, you'll feel calmer for it.

This afternoon, I sowed tomato seeds, then went mad and made four loaves of bread and a Victoria Sponge Cake (sampled to check it wasn't accidentally poisonous).
Four loaves of bread are arranged on a wire rack to cool while a Victoria Sponge Cake is on a plate next to the bread. A slice has already been taken from the cake. The rack and plate are on a stainless steel kitchen counter unit and a knife block, hand milk frother, scales, salt pig, small bowl and an orange kitchen utensils pot are arranged along the back of the counter top.

Today I went to see Don McCullin. 90. at @hauserwirth.bsky.social in Bruton, Somerset. Quite a romp through Sir Don's career from his early works to more recent projects. Sequencing was maybe a little haphazard for my tastes, but impressive all the same. Very much worth the visit.
Very wide angle view of the main gallery room at the Houser & Wirth art gallery in Bruton, Somerset. People study Don McCullin's photographs on the walls. The photos are framed in black. The walls are white, the ceiling is white and the floor is a light wood. Spot lights on the ceiling illuminate the pictures on the walls. There are bench seats for visitors to rest on, but everyone is close to the walls, studying the photographs.

As parts of the US get buried in snow, it reminds me of The Beast from the East we had in the UK in March '18. It wasn't so bad, and it gave the kids something else to do at Saxonvale. This one's in my book What Happened Here: www.takeagander.co.uk/-/galleries/... #independent #photobook #analogue
It is snowing as a boy in dark coat and trousers, with red gloves, swings high on a rope swing which is attached to a sturdy tree. He is swinging away from a boy in the foreground who is standing with his back to camera, watching his friend. He is also dressed in a dark hooded coat, dark trousers and trainers. His gloves are black. They are playing on scrubland which used to be an industrial site. Old industrial buildings are visible in the distance.

Foreground close-up of a pile of dumped timber, cans and garden cuttings on top of which a character doll lies with the side of its face resting on a sheet of decaying hard board. The naked doll, missing one leg, has the head of a middle-aged male cartoon character and has a distressed expression on its face as if it has just survived some horrific accident. Out of focus in the background, bare wasteland is fringed by low, disused industrial buildings.
