A #painting from the south of Ireland. "Passage East" came out of a time I visited the Waterford village by bicycle, and this was how it greeted me as I rolled off the ferry across Waterford Harbour from the Wexford side. Drinking tea here was like drinking tea in a fairy tale. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Landscape format in acrylics on canvas. Sunny day. Pale turquoise sky over very pale green and yellow square open at front and bright buildings with dark windows facing in on other sides. An orange two-story house is on the left, and behind to its right is the gable end of a white building, while facing us from the far side is a white 2-story house with violet slate roof, and adjoining it is a prominent 4-story yellow building, 4 window bays wide and sun-glinting pale blue slate roof. Behind is a green bushy steep hill, almost a bluff, with small red building perched on top, its shadowed gable end facing over the town. To right of the square in immediate foreground are road signs including "Welcome to Passage East" in white on red, and a black on white R683 directional sign to "Port Láirge - Waterford", both against a white wall in a flower bed surrounded by a curved wall of white-washed stones. In the centre of the square is a stone walled circular flower-bed, of blue-grey and orange stones in shadow, and 2 dark blue cars to the left where we see the edge of another flower bed. Blue and yellow bunting is strung across the square from lamp-posts. Signed bottom left in red, Liam Daly

Depictions of #fishweirs in art and maps across periods reflect their role in the physical and cultural landscape, as well as their economic value. They serve as both a tangible and abstract representation of human interaction with the ocean. #coastalhistory #muSEAum

Curator Noel Campbell recently spoke with Currachaí na Sceirí’s Shane Holland about his group’s Slí ár Sinsear – Voyage of our Ancestors, a months long, community project, to row from Ireland to Scotland in a Béal Deirg currach. www.museum.ie/.../Traditio.... #NMIBlog #MaritimeHistory #CuratorBlog
Traditional wooden rowing boat (a Belderrig currach) moored in the clear waters of Portpatrick Harbour, Scotland. A Mayo GAA flag is attached to the aft, which bears painted Gaelic text. In the background, a stone harbour wall, rocky shoreline, historic waterfront buildings, and a large hilltop hotel overlook the bay under bright sunshine and a cloudless blue sky. The image highlights maritime heritage, traditional boat-building, coastal culture, and historic harbour landscapes.

On this day 26th August 1940 a Nazi Heinkel HE III bomber attacked the village of Campile Co Wexford and three young women were killed while working at the Creamery. Their names were sisters Mary Ellen and Kitty Kent and Kathleen Hurley. The memorial garden was erected in 2010. Rest in Peace 🙏

Okay, so the N24 is a shitshow. But could we try putting on more than two train services a day on the already existing heavy rail connection? And maybe develop freight connections between Foynes, Port of Waterford and Rosslare (again, on pre-existing line)?

Picture of the Medmerry – Fish Traps. A 15th century dish trap complex made up of v and u shape feathers. A recent discovery found eroding out of a foreshore feature. Found in a highly active zone of erosion/deposition. Possibly a multi-period site that was used for fishing. #Coastalhistory

On This day 1917. A German mine laying submarine had exploded and sank after hitting her own mine. It would trigger a major secret salvage operation that would raise the vessel and allow the Admiralty to gain significant intelligence into sub mine laying operations. 28 of the 29 crew died.
