Why does Winnipeg media seem hellbent on getting this guy elected? I get he owns the Sun (his wife has published Residential School denialism stories while he’s been campaigning by the way), but why does the Freep feel the need to specifically highlight him in fluff pieces like this?

Good lord I’m getting sick of every person yelling “it’s AI” about every thing they see and/or read and don’t like. Humans make mistakes. It’s incredibly degrading to accuse people of using AI when you have zero evidence of them doing so, and lessens the argument when AI is actually being used.

I just read about this campground in @niigaanwewidam.bsky.social’s book this morning. It’s crazy to me a campground was permitted to be built there (with seemingly no regard for the children’s bodies it was built on top of) in the first place. www.winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews...

A burial site for dozens of children who died while attending the Brandon Indian Residential School will be acquired by the province, the Free Press has learned.

The US already got a do over. A mulligan. A second chance. Much of the world, especially US allies, were ready to write off Trump’s first term as a fluke. The American people’s choice to put him back in power—as a convicted felon, after an openly bigoted, anti-democracy campaign—showed it was not.

So many cyclist deaths begin with a stationary driver blocking the bike lane. The disconnect between cyclists, who see this as a life-threatening reckless action, and drivers, who see this is a minor parking infraction, is what often leads to discord.

The law is totally broken if exceeding the speed limit by 20km/h isn’t considered “dangerous”, and the “evidence the collision would not have occurred if he was driving the speed limit” is that stopping distance and reaction time are drastically different at 81 vs 60

A curve is an inherent safety issue that mitigates any culpability for exceeding the posted speed limit (perhaps set as such because of the existence of said curve?) by over 30%
McCarthy said the collision occurred at a curve along Archibald that likely would have obstructed Wright's view of southbound traffic.
"Therefore, there are some inherent safety issues with the location of the collision which are not related to Mr. Wright's driving," she said.

Being so distracted by your child’s surgery that you crash into a car in front of you while speeding, and then maim the occupant of another vehicle you crash into subsequently, isn’t reckless disregard for the safety of others. Intentionally driving without a license is not dangerous.
"There is no question that this collision was tragic and had life-altering consequences for two of the people involved. However, the role of the court in arriving at a just verdict is to conduct a dispassionate and impartial review of the facts and the law," McCarthy said.
Under the Criminal Code, proof of dangerous driving requires evidence that an accused had a subjective or actual intent to drive dangerously or drove with a reckless disregard for the safety of others. The prosecution argued the fact Wright was driving without a licence was evidence he lacked the experience of a reasonably prudent driver.
Driving without a licence is an offence under the Highway Traffic Act, and does not necessarily support a conviction for dangerous driving, McCarthy said, noting there was little clear evidence before the
court whether Wright ever held a valid driver's licence.

Again, a distracted driver, placing his needs above others on the road, exceeding the posted limit by over 30%, and causing bodily harm, is not “dangerous”
"Based upon his evidence it is clear that Mr.
Wright made the decision to drive knowing that he did not have a valid Manitoba driver's licence," McCarthy said.
"Based upon his evidence there is also the possibility that he may have been distracted and/or rushing to see his child in the hospital. Apart from these findings, there was no evidence of Mr. Wright's subjective mental state that would support a conviction (for dangerous driving causing bodily harm)."

When they close Sherbrook pool and say there’s no money for repairs, remember that they’re doing it to build water slides for suburban kids. But I’m sure all those kids in the west end can just drive to the regional facility.
Initial city plans call for a 38,000-square-foot facility, with a sixor eight-lane lap pool, a leisure pool, change rooms and program space. Water slides, spray features, a lazy river, whirlpool/hot tub and steam room are also among the proposed features.
That would add to the 59,000-squarefoot recreation centre and a 20,000-square-foot child-care centre, which are expected to open in spring 2028.
The city set aside $1.3 million for a contractor to design the aquatic area, complete public consultation and ensure the facility is energy efficient.
When asked if the cash-strapped city can afford the new aquatics centre, Mayor Scott Gillingham said the project is worth considering.
