this also means it’s the 29th anniversary of the time i gathered all the courage i had to tell one of the adults responsible for me as a kid “i think i’m a girl?” & she said “no, you’re not—that’s just in fashion now.” so i spent 2 decades trying to drink myself to death. don’t be like either of us

alan moore got really angry about the adaptation of v for vendetta (shocker!) because he felt it no longer reflected the specific way british fascism felt and would feel and was a more generic, american thing and i didn’t quite get his point in 2006 but i very much get it now.

my favorite film ever is either adaptation or eternal sunshine & i cannot shake the idea that the film charlie *wants* to make out of orlean’s the orchid thief is basically in the mood for love but there’s no way into that for 99% of people. talent & craft notwithstanding. reach exceeds grasp, &c.

E2. it feels like a stretch to call zhang loathsome. the hotelier at the end being like, “you’re quite a friend always paying her rent.” but her life—which she seems quite content with for a while until it sours & begins to let her down—is something he sits quietly by and observes without acting.

E1. seems only right to end it here. i have found so so many of wong’s men so compellingly loathsome. so well drawn & each a bit rancid in his own way that is absolutely fascinating to stare at. i’m…not 100% sure but zhang may be the most decent man he put together? but it’s not quite that simple.
