Glad that folks see a difference! Also I keep hemhawing on what to call a feature that encapsulates “your chances to act” (confs, meetups, cons, etc.) Originally called it Shots (as in ⛹️‍♀️), but now I’m thinking of “(tour) stops” as a mental model?

Okay, time to dust off the old poasting button to ask a Little CRM question: do you consider conferences *different* than conventions? In my mind, a conference is for professional development, while a *convention* is a celebration of a cultural/social aspect.

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

If he wanted to protect his team, he should have hired more people, or reduced the scope of delivery. Simple. But someone needs to get rich, right? So that is not happening.

One of the things I know about writing is this: spend it all, shoot it, play it, lose it, all, right away, every time. Do not hoard what seems good for a later place in the book or for another book; give it, give it all, give it now. The impulse to save something good for a better place later is the signal to spend it now. Something more will arise for later, something better. These things fill from behind, from beneath, like well water. Similarly, the impulse to keep to yourself what you have learned is not only shameful, it is destructive. Anything you do not give freely and abundantly becomes lost to you. You open your safe and find ashes.

The new shows, and current television in general, puts focus on the overarching story of each season told in like 8 episodes, like an 8 hour movie or something, when TNG and DS9 are like “we gotta fill time for 24 episodes this one is uhhhhhhhhhhhhh what if Quark thought he was dying”

It should really bother everyone more that these "AI" companies and the people that run them are always— ALWAYS— looking for ways to trick or coerce us into giving up more and more ourselves to them.

Also! As a former student who very much looked up to his teachers: these letters are a LIFELINE/shining point for students. That’s arguably even more important than the college rec commendation part. Do you really want to outsource that? What message does it convey to someone you’ve taught?

There are lots of ways to answer this and one of them is that studying history makes you a better citizen and our public universities have an obligation to produce good citizens. History education is essential to a republican model of government. Engineering is not.

The visions that SV techbros have for is honestly so dark, so bleak, so isolated and isolating; one where any and all community and connection is pushed aside in this perverse forceful push to transcend our bodies, born of their terror of disability and death. These people decide our futures, my god
itself. Our physical bodies would be discarded, and in their place would rise robotic übermenschen. Our minds, so tragically prone to decline as we age, would be transferred to flawless, immortal code. Machines were about to mature “from the simple devices they still are, to entities as complex as ourselves, to something transcending everything we know, in whom we can take pride when they refer to themselves as our descendants,” Moravec wrote.

Today is a big day for Herb! It's built into Rails 8.2 by default for all HTML+ERB views. My talk at #RailsWorld in Austin today answered three questions: What is Herb? What ships in Rails 8.2? And what does this enable? Herb v0.11 and ReActionView v0.6 released alongside it.

In a world where tech companies were altruistic and moved slowly and governments weren't afraid of strict regulation, I'd be somewhat sanguine about driverless cars and how they could help fill in transit gaps or benefit non-drivers. Sadly, we do not live in that world.

When you hear a fantastical story about AI, you should ask yourself, "How does this serve the political project of AI?" Because, as others have pointed out, that's what AI really amounts to: a political project.

The most generous assessment is that this was shitty, lazy engineering; the more in-character scenario is that the sandbox was intentionally breakable because of the story it would generate. Whichever you believe, the story is not "OMG, they made AGI!"

I’ve seen a lot of this worry but to me the core is this: data centers provide little to negative actual benefit to Normal People. Even if you like them, they’re not especially exciting to have nearby. There are very real people who are stoked to advocate for local green power, and that does matter.
