Years ago I spent the night at Walter de Maria’s Lightning Field in New Mexico. Walking along the Norfolk coast yesterday, I was struck by how this wind farm out at sea resembles that piece of land art. It really got me thinking about how we value objects in wild places… (1)

On a different, but related note, your book “In Another World: The Four Seasons of Talk Talk” is a fantastic, in-depth analysis of such an enigmatic band. A great piece of detective work and a superb, illuminating read.

Indeed! An incredible, shiver-inducing album from start to finish, with so many beautiful arrangements, and always something fresh to find in the mix that had gone unnoticed on previous listens.

Personally, I’d find that a nigh on impossible task. For me, this is a drop the needle, listen all through side A, flip album and drop the needle and listen all through side B. An album to become fully immersed in its sonic world, and not to be interrupted.

"Harry Partch was profoundly idiosyncratic. To play [his] music, he built a series of string and percussion instruments tuned to his scale, and even re-tuned pump organs. Because his music is so specialized—requiring Partch’s own instruments to play it—his discography is small but complete."

If you love American music, this is monumental. The clarity on this discovered test pressing reveals Johnson's genius to an even greater degree than the '61 re-release of his 29 songs. You can hear the stabbing slide and delicate fingering on every string. Amazing.

The grotesque & beautiful dreams of 1920s cinema remain just as powerful today One of the most creatively exciting periods in moviemaking saw the likes of Maya Deren, Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí bringing cinematic surreality to the masses. A new film, Gerald Fox’s ‘Kinaesthesia’, unpacks it all.
