Years ago I spent the night at Walter de Maria’s Lightning Field in New Mexico. Walking along the Norfolk coast yesterday, I was struck by how this wind farm out at sea resembles that piece of land art. It really got me thinking about how we value objects in wild places… (1)

"Alongside the development of the hipster character came a golden age of film and TV soundtracks, music that represented hipness in mainstream culture. For decades, that meant jazz and the dozens of fantastic, classically hip soundtracks from the era testify to that fact."

"Harry Partch was profoundly idiosyncratic. To play [his] music, he built a series of string and percussion instruments tuned to his scale, and even re-tuned pump organs. Because his music is so specialized—requiring Partch’s own instruments to play it—his discography is small but complete."

If you love American music, this is monumental. The clarity on this discovered test pressing reveals Johnson's genius to an even greater degree than the '61 re-release of his 29 songs. You can hear the stabbing slide and delicate fingering on every string. Amazing.
