I think there is a simple reason for this claim from @garbageday.email — most people don’t choose what they listen to on Spotify. The platform has done a decade of work to convince most users to choose a mood or playlist and then make no more choices

I think Ian's suggestion in that article is great -- to create a national development fund to find/build the "too small, too uncertain, too weird, or too inconvenient." There is absolutely a way to make/find/fund stuff that give people a deeper connection to public radio

What I do hear about are the weirder more adventurous radio pieces. Listeners are smart and like surprising stuff. Many feel like their local station is a conduit for something interesting & beautiful. I think public radio would be wise to explore that vein, not chase the NYT (or Spotify) model.

But in my experience, the listenership is very diverse. There are a ton of smart listeners, rural listeners, listeners with strange and contradictory political beliefs, etc etc.. And I have never heard one of them say they love The Daily, which airs locally. (no offense to the team there)

As an armchair quarterback on Public Radio programming, I think the people-in-charge don't give listeners enough credit & expect them to like very produced, milquetoast programming. They think listeners lose interest if a magazine story is over 5 minutes, and that anything "weird" scares folks off.

Some great lines in this article about NPR acquiring a big show from NYT. "Give it just enough money to take real swings, enough independence to move before twelve committees agree, and a mandate broad enough to follow audiences instead of formats."

Good one by new @flaminghydra.com @katewagner.wehwalt.net flaminghydra.com/issue-513/
Vampiristic. Fascists rarely make art. Instead, the fascist aesthete’s job is to appropriate existing art for the purpose of aestheticizing a political goal. Because fascism relies on the fetishization of the past—whether real or imaginary—nothing truly new can come from fascist art.
Violent. Dehumanization, augmented by technological abstraction—the sublimation of man into machine—creates under fascism an extreme predilection for violence. In Italian Fascism, this role was played by the automobile, as evidenced by the fascination of Futurist artists like Marinetti with car crashes. (Today, AI deepfakes play a similar role.) Fascist aesthetics are ruthlessly hierarchical and their satisfaction is derived from the maintenance of that hierarchy. They are antisocial and rely on shock value.

Anyway not a particularly unique experience but it was my first interaction with AI as a bafflingly bad search tool with no basis in reality. I imagine many people would have seen chat gpt’s claim that the quotes were verified and called it a day, which is concerning.
030
The Wind @thewind.org · 22/06/2025
Since I was desperate at this point, I tried it out and it said every quote I used was correct, accurate and completely attributable to the source. But not a single one offered a verifiable primary source. They all just pointed to other quote sites, which pointed to eachother.
110
The Wind @thewind.org · 22/06/2025
I found a quote verification page run by humans but the quotes I used didn’t appear, so I searched for a “quote verification tool” at which point chat gpt came up.
100
The Wind @thewind.org · 22/06/2025
Google ai kept popping up and confirming quotes were “accurate and correct” but the sources were garbage sites that were definitely unreliable
100
The Wind @thewind.org · 22/06/2025
first I used Google to search, but every quote was filtered through a million other seo articles and quote pages so I couldn’t find a single page that could confirm some of the quotes (just a million reposts of it)
110
The Wind @thewind.org · 22/06/2025
Anyway, they provide assignments and a recent article assignment had me include a few “famous quotes” about the topic. The assignment said to make sure the quotes are accurate and attributable.

Also, the episode features scoring by two Aeolian Harps. This one was built specifically to provide drones for this episode. Hope you dig it.
A triangular prism shaped wooden box stands upright in a freaky ass tunnel. The wooden object is an aeolian harp, aka wind harp, which sings in the wind. Single string runs length wise over 3 sound holes.
