#OnThisDay in 1930, the dwarf planet Pluto was discovered by astronomer Clyde Tombaugh. Astronomers had noticed that the orbits of Neptune and Uranus were being affected by the gravity of an unknown object in the Solar System, and so set out to search for the mysterious planet.
A 'true colour' photo of the dwarf planet Pluto taken by the NASA New Horizons probe. The planetoid is light in colour with some dark patches.
