Oh hey I'm on Wikipedia lol. That's cool. I'm not sure when Wikipedia got a page on trans literature, but I'm pretty sure it didn't exist two years ago. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transge...
Still, intersectional trans literature is a slow-growing genre.[31][12] Scholar Bethany Karsten found very few Black transfeminine novelists upon a survey of the field in 2024. Novels published in the 2020s included Shola von Reinhold's LOTE, Alexandrine Ogundimu's The Longest Summer, Kuchenga Shenjé's The Library Thief, and Denne Michele Norris's When the Harvest Comes.[31] Kuchenga Shenjé praised the nuanced intersectional transmasculine narrative within the 2020 novel The Vanishing Half, by cisgender author Brit Bennett.[12]

I think it's fair to say it's been a pain in the neck.
It remains to be seen how the perceived distancing of establishment Democrats from trans issues, such as California Governor Gavin Newsom's very public alignment with the reactionary Charlie Kirk of TPUSA on trans women in sports will affect political party affiliation among trans voters.

Anyway today's read is the revised edition of Transgender History by @susanstryker.bsky.social. I've read 2ed at least five times, and I got through two chapters at the library earlier. Not much I haven't already said about this book. Pineco seems like a good fit, couldn't explain to you why.

Or maybe it's not a perspective thing? Now I'm just confused.
Zuri laid back and stretched for a moment before gripping the bar. Intense, guttural drums and guitars played in her earpieces, keeping her blood pumping. She unracked the barbell and began her repetitions, hitting eight without trouble. She sat up with a slow blink before leaning over to press a button on the machine–it loaded up another plate on each side, metal clanging. Zuri hit another set, straining a little this time. She added more weight. She hit another set. On her last, she yelled at the top of her lungs for enough guts to grant her one additional count. Those tattooed, heavy arms fell down to her sides. I have to pull double duty.

Changing the font and typeface to keep the prose in third person limited, rather than using free indirect discourse, is an interesting stylistic choice. Not sure how I feel about it yet.
A bump of her brows and a tilted chin as Bho flicked a glance between what she had written and Tyson’s face. Oh no. Drilled. “Sergeant.” She stood stiffly and placed both of her palms on the desk, leaning forward ever so slightly. “You’ve just described yourself. Given our alignment of vision, I’ve made the decision to offer you the position of Platoon Commander.”

"Dark things in East Asia" Girl what. I'm not getting paid enough to deal with this novella's relationship to race smh. Using slavery for cheap shock value with no depth or payoff.
“I’ll let you in on a secret.” Needle teeth drew blood from Jacob’s lips. “You, he wanted you. He was an addict of your kind. A sick and twisted sin. That’s why they discharged him; he got addicted to little sinners like you, got a bum leg when he got a little too forceful. Lust and envy drove him to dark things in East Asia. But ever his thoughts were of you. And you led him on. You’re only a half-bitch at best. I guess that’s why Jacob liked you. If I let him have your bitch-boy body, I can do my job. Why he would want half a woman, I don’t know.”

Lol wait until she learns I found it on Amazon. That's the real horror story here.
“What kind of fucked up horror story has ghosts, haunted houses and a serial killer?!” I asked as I nearly slipped on the old runner—moth eaten and decaying in this part of the manor. My hands instinctually grabbed the candelabra on the wall nearest. It snapped and clattered to the floor.

The Transfeminine Review @thetransfemininereview.com · 07/06/2026
Chat I regret to inform you that the primary driver of the horror here appears to be white guilt. With a side heaping of whatever this is.
The rain and the house devoured the silence that followed with relentless sounds. It was Jacob who spoke first. “Yea, its like its warn’in us. Heard som’thin. In the big ol’ oven. Knocking, and a mans voice…” We all looked in the corner where a massive iron black oven was recessed into a brick wall. “What’d he say?” I asked. “Master will cook you too.” “Fuck me,” Mason breathed out, then cracked open the cheap booze and took a swig. He proffered it to me, and I nodded in thanks. Nevermind his swearing, I felt the situation called for a little mild cursing.“Right before I heard you calling for me, Alexie, I thought I saw bodies in a tree outside the house. Then I heard knocking… from inside the walls.” “Your-you’re joking. I made that up. The original owners didn’t actually kill and hide their slaves in the walls… did they?” My hands shook, so I tried to distract them with more jerky. I was just trying to sell the place to the bank. Did I manifest some horrid thing? Did that make me a horrible person? I shook my head. Telling a story and committing an atrocity were different ballparks. I couldn’t do that, who in God’s grace could? Spinning a tale about such evil… well. God gave us free will, and that included the dark parts of one’s imagination. They’re called intrusive thoughts for a reason.

Mmm blood flavored whiskey, delicious. I gotta say, it's going for Southern Gothic but it's giving more Hallmark. Back in high school my family was really into Good Witch, this is reminding me of that lmao.
Thick, sweet, and coppery with the same tart cherry and chocolate notes. I glared accusingly at the liquid gold, then at the room. Was there something different about the corner where I had aged it? Each barrel had its own corner so I could experiment. This one was closest to the brick wall and stairs to the kitchen above. Ventilation? Or perhaps an unseen mold on the brick, or rusty nails. A thought coiled in my mind. “It tastes like blood.” Another sip, and the thought tightened around my fears. It was slight, the taste, faint as a fleeting memory. Yet, it remained present. I licked my lips as I imagined a dead body in the barrel. One of the dead residents taking up a home in my whiskey.

We can only aspire to work the corn and provide the hooch 😊
Who am I to judge? After all, being a trans woman in a small southern town would be a death sentence in most other places. It helped that the pastor was my stepfather; he took me in when my parents died in a terrible accident. They only ever found an arm and some blood. Out of the four hundred or so people in our town, only a handful brought their concerns to Pastor John about my transition. Claiming I was acting out, they said it was the Devil’s work. Pastor John had some words for those people. “Does God not know us? Did He not breathe life into our very being? If He has a plan and knows who ‘we’ are before conception, molded us, then who are we to say this is wrong? I ask you, how does Alex—now Alexie—truly harm your life? Listen not to the snakes, but to your heart and God. Alexie is part of our community; she works the corn like all of you and provides your hooch. So, I would ask all those with sin and hate in their hearts to pray and let go.”

Okay an indefinite power source in a setting that already has near-flawless nanotech.... I'm a little worried about jumping the shark here.
"Wait, it's free power?" Satya asked, stunned. " Like a perpetual motion machine?" "On the nano-scale," her computer replied. The display shifted, and a subset of the massive field of numbers was emphasized. "The conversion ratios are severely and exponentially limited, and remain subject to basic principles of entropy. A device of this size is the upper bound of what could theoretically be powered by such a conversion." Satya was silent for a long minute. "How long could a nanite run, using tech like this?" she asked softly. "Indefinitely," the computer replied. Satya concentrated on breathing. "From a half hour between charges to forever," she muttered, and shook her head.

"I seem to be a latecomer to a rather exciting game," Dahlstedt said. "A dangerous one, I'll grant you, but a potentially world-changing one as well." "I've got a corpse. I wouldn't call that a game," Dan said coolly. "Of course it is a game. It is that most ancient and barbarous of games, yet that most crucial," Dahlstedt countered. "I speak of the game of control, and we stand on the precipice of perhaps the last round of that game to be played for a very long time." She paused, and then added, "Depending on the victor, of course."

Oh yeah, Laura is waaaaay worse in this draft. And frankly a much more compelling antagonist than Desdemona, this is the literary equivalent of kicking a stray cat. I absolutely loathe petty mean girl shit.
“You didn’t offend me. You could not possibly “offend” me, Katherine. Because you know what you are?” Laura’s voice drips with venom. “You’re a loser so fucking desperate for approval that you’ll let me call you by an entirely different name without correcting me once. You’re basically a clown I keep around to socialise my shut-in girlfriend. That’s the only reason I’m not sending you packing tonight, despite your eagerness to incriminate yourself. Capisce?”

The great thing about this novel is that almost every single page of it is quotable. I'll do my best to exercise restraint so that I can, yknow, actually finish it in a reasonable timeframe.
Laura arches her eyebrows. “What else do I need? Gender is a fascinating subject. Not only does every man in this competition have a unique perspective on it, but he has a more enlightened, three-dimensional view than most, including trans women. We understand what it is to be transfeminised without surrendering our manhood! We are assured of our manhood even when those who gaze upon us are not! We are, dare I say it, more men than any man who has not tested the mettle of his gender in the fires we forge ours in! So yes, Izzy, I’ve written fiction about trans women. I intend to teach them what we know. Impart that wretched lot with as much faith in their womanhood as we have in our manhood.” I couldn’t help it. I actually gasped. The conviction, the skill, the mastery of both philosophy and oratory—Laura is everything a trans woman dreams of being.

I’m not browsing the videos with two men today. Instead, I scroll down to the very bottom, to a folder within this folder, its offerings sealed by a second, more secure password. Inside I find the only thing that could possibly satisfy me tonight. I’m already drowning in shame. It’s not like it can get any worse. So I open my secret stash of clips and ravenously, longingly stare at a collage of men having sex with women. It’s wrong. It’s sick. It’s the only thing that gets me off when I let myself think how badly I want to be with Kyle, and how I’ll never get to be.

Only a visual demonstration will suffice now. Nicholas will be in a better place to accept what I have told him once he can no longer deny the truth before his very eyes. I throw back my hood, revealing my now-luscious shoulder-length locks, and jump to my feet, unzipping my hoodie all the way in a single fluid motion. Unfortunately, a crisp packet catches me underfoot. I slip and tumble back onto Nicholas’ bed. To play this off as an intentional manoeuvre, I throw my overgarment open and unveil the bodacious, buxom torso I have been struggling to conceal. “Behold!” Nicholas frowns at my tittage. He’s unmoved by the bounty that has spilled forth before him. Perhaps Jeffrey’s oafish speculation on Nicholas’ sexuality has some merit after all? “Well, I’m glad you’re comfortable enough to wear a magical girl t-shirt?” Nicholas shrugs. “Does that mean you’re ready to admit the hoodie’s pink?” “It is salmon, you unrepentant plebeian, and that is not what I’m attempting to draw your attention towards!”

In unrelated news, I may have a terminal case of eggfic brainrot lmao 😅
A third consideration is that John reads rather eggy. I acknowledge my bias as a reader of trans fiction, but it's definitely an odd place to have such a blank slate man as the main character and viewpoint protagonist of a story that heavily deals in trans themes. It's a subversion of what you'd expect from similar characters in other trans novels - John just reads transfemme, and it's never explored or questioned in the story, despite heavy traffic in trans themes.

Probably that says more about me as a reader than WWAS as a novel. I'll be the first to acknowledge that when your favorite trans tropes are the hammer, every generic and vaguely listless male protagonist starts to look like a nail.
