I've been doing lots of interviews for my past several videos, as you've probably noticed. I'd until now been posting the full conversation to Patreon, and using bits and pieces in the videos. So I figured since I was already basically making a podcast, I might as well... make it a podcast. Enjoy!

the real resentment for me is that you can say "we should get rid of billionaires" to an audience of millions & that counts for less than saying "we should make billionaires kings" to an audience of 3 billionaires

No two words send AI industry advocates into fits of rage more than "stochastic parrots." The question is: Why? Why do they get so worked up over this particular critical framework time and time again? I sat down with @emilymbender.bsky.social, one of the coauthors of the original paper, to discuss

I talk with computational linguist Emily M. Bender, co-author of the influential 2021 “stochastic parrots” paper, about why AI industry leaders can’t stop seething over the term.

Two thing can be true. The WH kicking out media it doesn’t like is absolutely a First Amendment violation. And There is little journalism of value to be found in the highly controlled, substance-free halls of power—wall-to-wall navel-gazing about one’s access probably being of the least value.

"The danger of AI, therefore, is not an emergent superintelligence, but the very fact that AI’s supposed “intelligence” is used as a shield from accountability. The danger is the new Cold War arms race, where AI dominance means geopolitical power and a re-entrenchment of American hegemony."

This NRA reference is also used by Latour! And I tend to agree with him: we need to look at the full "system," which includes the mechanisms, but also users, designers, bureaucracies, labor, economics. "The machine did this" hides that; "the process produced this" has to surface it.

Ryan Hodes (The Stories We Tell) @thestorieswetell.co · 17/09/2026
That's what's often missed in discussions of these EA freaks and their supposed concern about "existential risk": many of them don't give a shit if humans go extinct, as @xriskology.bsky.social often points out, so long as there is a "worthy successor" (aka superintelligence) that replaces us.
110
Ryan Hodes (The Stories We Tell) @thestorieswetell.co · 17/09/2026
And speaking of eugenics, Yudkowsky is also comfortable "sacrificing humanity" to bring about bodiless superintelligences who "care about each other and are having fun," whatever that means. Brings to mind Peter Thiel's indifference when asked if the human race should endure.

Ryan Hodes (The Stories We Tell) @thestorieswetell.co · 17/09/2026
He is also not a fringe figure in AI. Sam Altman said Yudkowsky “got many of us interested in AGI” and “was critical in the decision to start OpenAI.” He introduced Peter Thiel to the founders of DeepMind and influenced the ideas of Nick Bostrom, another eugenicist who is hugely influential.
