A warehouse with no access road wouldn't fly; why would a datacenter without power be any different? And yes, much as you wouldn't get away with plowing a road through a village, power supply (and water, connectivity, etc etc) will also need to be negotiated and contracted for.

Some people are looking at Microsoft pulling out of the proposed Nscale #AI datacenter in the UK as a sign of something. Personally, I think it's a sign that companies are going to have to get much more serious about the mundane work of planning these builds.

Unclear — especially because just down the road from the one that closed is the still-vacant lot from one that closed ~10 years ago. As you say, remediation is not easy, although local government is trying to push brownfield development over eating up yet more greenfield sites.

Technically yes, but being in town, there are better options literally across the road. Another petrol station (used to be my go-to car wash) just closed. Someone is presumably making plans to buy up lots of suddenly-distressed real estate over the next few years! Although cleanup will be a mess.

Weird and slightly post-apocalyptic experience today: pulled into a petrol station because my EV had a low tyre pressure warning, and they were coincidentally out of petrol. They charged me €1 to use the air compressor. I’m not sure that’s going to make up the shortfall in revenue, lads.

On Learning Languages
When the topic of languages comes up in conversation, people are sometimes surprised to hear how many languages I speak. The reactions mainly break down into two different groups:

Meanwhile here in Italy, English lessons start in elementary school (very basic, but still), and then a second language is added from middle school (usually one of French, German, or Spanish, with occasional exceptions). Is it *good*? Eh — but it’s good enough as a base to work from.

For a country with so many trains, they are INCOMPREHENSIBLY EXPENSIVE. I recently spent more on a train ticket from the Midlands to London than on the airfare to get to England in the first place; also more than it cost for the entire family to go from Milan to Naples and back by high-speed train.

The local dialect here is dying in front of our eyes. The grandparents speak it, my generation understands it, and our kids have no idea. That’s in the city; up in the hills it hangs on a bit better, and there is a definite class divide too. Sad to see it happen.

Building a curriculum is an exercise in compromise, as I see with my own kids’ experiences in school: why do we do so much of this, should we not do more of that. My answer is that you don’t know what will be useful, and if you have a solid foundation, skill acquisition on top is quick and easy.

At Microsoft, which rolled out Al widely internally, executive vice-president Ryan Roslansky recently publicly lamented the prevalence of Al slop in his day-to-day work. After receiving iwhat was clearly an Al-generated doc from a co-worker, he used his Al to summarize it and came away with no new thinking about the idea, he said. He warned his followers against falling into this potential "doom loop", where Al does the reading and writing and leaves behind an "ocean of sameness".

Well yes, I participate in society. Curious! And yet I can also choose to minimise harm: if I have to drive, drive an EV; if I don’t, take public transport or a bike. Even that level of harm reduction is seen as too far by many, though — but maybe they’d listen to their plastic pal telling them so?

Love how all these guys are seeing the reaction to Apple putting an always-listening #AI on people’s wrists (tl;dr: “ewww, creepy”) and decided this was the best time to push out their own version of the same idea.
Screenshot of a LinkedIn post from Andy Jassy of Amazon:
“Excited about our new Bee devices launching today. They turn your conversations into summaries, to-dos, and reminders, so the details are there when you need them.
Bee Frontier goes on your wrist or clips to your clothing, and Bee Eclipse snaps to the back of your phone to catch what you'd otherwise forget throughout your day, whether it's notes from a class you're taking, the details of a trip you're planning, or an idea that comes to you in the car.
They connect to Alexa+ and Amazon.com, so the things you mention are easy to find later. And you're always in control... one button turns it on or off, a light shows when it's on, audio is never stored, and only you can see your data.
Think folks are gonna find this really handy.”

EVs are a critical plank of energy security and resilience — as long as generation (and transmission) strategy also adapts. Solar and wind require inputs, sure, but not continuous ones: once the capacity is installed, it works for years or decades, powering clean(er) transportation.

True, but on the other hand sometimes I do want the specificity of SQL (or something like it) rather than the fighting my way through an endless parade of “did you mean…?”. The frustration is often with poorly-deployed or -designed AI, rather than the concept of AI itself.

I gave Elevation Labs a kicking when they launched their #AirTag silencer, and I was not the only one. Well, it seems they actually listened, and issued what I would call a pretty dang good apology — including specifically the line that they will prevent others from building anything like this. 👏👏👏
We launched an AirTag silencing tool recently. We’ve always made products we want for ourselves, and this was no different - we wanted it for AirTags on our bikes. (Some of us have bikes more valuable than our cars.)

In retrospect though, this also has the side effect of aiding someone with bad intentions to track someone that wouldn’t get phone notifications.

We have removed the product and will use our patent on it to prevent anyone else from making one in the future.

Sincerely,
Elevation Lab
