Love how all these guys are seeing the reaction to Apple putting an always-listening #AI on people’s wrists (tl;dr: “ewww, creepy”) and decided this was the best time to push out their own version of the same idea.
Screenshot of a LinkedIn post from Andy Jassy of Amazon:
“Excited about our new Bee devices launching today. They turn your conversations into summaries, to-dos, and reminders, so the details are there when you need them.
Bee Frontier goes on your wrist or clips to your clothing, and Bee Eclipse snaps to the back of your phone to catch what you'd otherwise forget throughout your day, whether it's notes from a class you're taking, the details of a trip you're planning, or an idea that comes to you in the car.
They connect to Alexa+ and Amazon.com, so the things you mention are easy to find later. And you're always in control... one button turns it on or off, a light shows when it's on, audio is never stored, and only you can see your data.
Think folks are gonna find this really handy.”

I gave Elevation Labs a kicking when they launched their #AirTag silencer, and I was not the only one. Well, it seems they actually listened, and issued what I would call a pretty dang good apology — including specifically the line that they will prevent others from building anything like this. 👏👏👏
We launched an AirTag silencing tool recently. We’ve always made products we want for ourselves, and this was no different - we wanted it for AirTags on our bikes. (Some of us have bikes more valuable than our cars.)

In retrospect though, this also has the side effect of aiding someone with bad intentions to track someone that wouldn’t get phone notifications.

We have removed the product and will use our patent on it to prevent anyone else from making one in the future.

Sincerely,
Elevation Lab

Sorry, as a guy I have no useful direct experience of menopause to offer! When it comes to gloves, though, my experience has been that things have moved on markedly even over the last ten years. Full-on padded gloves that look like skiing gloves, and dedicated lined winter boots, keep me going.

Sadly it looks like the GA version of #iOS27 still has the bug where if you try to share a workout, it generates a fixed-width tile and any overflowing text is simply cut off. I’m assuming Apple never tested with metric units?

If you send me #spam with no unsubscribe link, at a minimum I will report it, but if you catch me at the wrong moment, I will also go to the trouble of reporting you to your email provider, and maybe even reaching out to tell you to cut it out.
Put unsubscribe links in your spam outreach, or soon you won't be able to send any more - no, not even by buying pre-warmed domains, like the one that I received spam from. You think you're the only ones to have thought of this amazing idea, but you really really aren't. Any legitimate prospects you reach will initially simply be turned off and trash emails like this, then escalate to reporting them as spam, and if you catch them at the wrong moment, they will reach out and give you a piece of their mind.
Get out of my inbox, I have work to do.

Happy 50th birthday to the Internet! I honestly don't know what I would have done without it, and despite the odd moment of doubt, overall I think it's a massive force for good. Here's to the next 50 years!
BEGINNING OF THE INTERNET AGE
On August 27, 1976, scientists from SRI International celebrated the successful completion of tests by sending an electronic message from a computer set up at a picnic table behind the Alpine Inn. The message was sent via a radio network to SRI and on through a second network, the ARPANET, to Boston, This event marked the beginning of the Internet Age.

Today in #adtech nonsense: these shirts have been following me everywhere on the Web all week. With all the data these companies have on me, is this the best they can do? The bargain was that we surrendered any expectation of #privacy in exchange for better ads. Where are the better ads?

I agree. For Airbnb, it's not just about describing the property, it's about **making people dream**. The ads that convert best tell a story about an experience while remaining rich in information. They use flowing paragraphs, headings and lists, without relying on emojis.
Here is a more premium example, in the spirit of luxury ads.

I assume we’ve all had a colleague like this cat, right?
A small operation in Oregon that hunts truffles with a trained dog has added an unpaid trainee. A cat named Larry accompanies the handler and the truffle dog into the woods every outing, works a patch of ground a little apart from them, and digs with tremendous confidence in places where there is nothing.
The handler says Larry has never found a truffle and shows no sign of understanding the assignment. He does not use scent the way the dog does and he does not respond when the dog makes a find.
He simply digs his own holes nearby and then inspects them. "He thinks he's on the team," the handler said. "He is emphatically not on the team."

Complete #UX fail on the part of #Amazon. At least tell me what this *was*, so I can go look for it somewhere else. And I bet it's some overly-literal interpretation of "not available", when one specific edition does not ship to Italy or whatever. Guess that's my cue to stop relying on Amazon!

More on the issue of #AI-reported issues in open-source projects, from @mitsuhiko.at — who is far from being a hater, but is clear-eyed about the downsides of how we are doing things today. As long as we try to use AI tools in existing processes, we will cause more problems than we solve. #FOSS
Keep in mind that AI has not increased the number of people who need software, or the number of maintainers who can review it. It has mostly increased the amount of code and the number of projects competing for attention. Some of that is healthy, but a lot of it fragments effort that should be shared.
