Does my Speak-n-Spell feel pain when I type O-U-C-H? The jury is out. Philosophers and neuroscientists say that's fucking stupid, but I called a guy from the Center for Pretending that Household Electronics Are Sentient and he said there's no way to know for sure.

Sam Altman: "My dog has shit in your yard. In fact, it turns out it has been shitting there for several months. The fence I built for it does not have a bottom rung, which it appears is key to keeping the dog in our garden. Thanks for your help in cleaning up as we investigate how this happened!"

I’m really not sure that “goes rogue” is an accurate description of a behavior that is apparently both habitual and condoned

The company's A.l. went rogue this year at least four additional times, trying to break into government and university sites.

Really enjoying Rachel Cusk's Life of M, it is well drawn and also quite brutal. Also maybe just an indication that, with both this and the Jonathan Safran Foer debacle, Natalie Portman shouldn't hang out with writers?

This is from yesterday's Politico, but it's the mood of the day... the government's policy is the current law/targets. We're not in an election campaign, they're the sitting government. Why are we taking talking points from ON as prompts?

Dear increasingly broken by Gemini inclusion Google Sheets, I do not want to convert to a table. I never want to convert to a table. I'm using a spreadsheet because it's a spreadsheet. If I wanted a table, I'd go to a doc.

Anyone else never get the second stage SMS for Radiohead tickets in Australia? Seems to be a lot of people online saying they were in a similar boat.

I love the liberal use of inky black shadows and accents in the new Netflix animated show Dang!. It's a lovely and novel choice for an animated series.

Ted Lasso went to shit in season 3, why is it kinda good again in season 4, when it had no need to come back and felt like it had overstayed its perfectly timed COVID welcome? Back to actually enjoying it

The government's Help to Buy scheme is using equity to help people on lower incomes into their (mostly) first homes with just 2% deposits. Melbourne regions make up the top six areas where applications have been approved since the scheme started... and it's already our third cheapest city.

Where first home buyers have been getting into the market this year
The typical buyer had a deposit of $31,000 and some areas had a much higher rate of take-up than others, new figures show.

From Politico today... AI is not going to help our productivity, because our productivity "problem" is a measurement one. We don't measure productivity in some of our largest growing industries in a useful way, i.e. is comparable or captures improvements. www.abs.gov.au/articles/pri...

Helen Dale has gone full calipers in the last several years (either that or she has chosen to be more public about those beliefs). There hasn't been a lot of media interest which you could see as a mixed blessing.

Cartoon.
Scene is women's public toilets. A woman in a shirt saying 'TERF PATROL" is on a ladder peering over a locked door into a cubicle. She's saying "Just checking your genitalia to make sure you're not one of those creepy perverts who lurk in women's toilets"

I get a lot of AI ads about writing SOPs and there have been periods of my life where I had to write these, but I don't see how that's a long-term business strategy for AI companies given how relatively infrequently most people have to write or update them and how few people specifically do this

I am training for a half Iron Man and I am always tired, always hungry, and always off to hit a new goal on the path, because it's a long one. It's great, I fucking love it. I don't talk about it much because I realise it's insufferable, but here is my occasional dispatch.

Houses are selling for close to 20% less in some parts of the Melbourne market... which is bad news for vendors, but pretty great if you're looking to buy.

The Melbourne houses selling for hundreds of thousands of dollars less
House buyers could pay six figures less for some family homes than they would have in a hotter market.

I am watching season 3 of Shrinking for some reason, and even though I kind of enjoy it, I'm not sure why people talk about it like it's "good" tv. It's kinda bad. It's just not the kind of bad anyone really makes anymore, and maybe that's comforting.

This might be one of the funniest chart about energy scenarios I’ve seen. You can hardly see “actual” for gas
Winners and Losers
The IEA overestimated gas growth in Asia and underestimated solar

Gas
• Forecast 547 TWh
• Actual 17 TWh

Solar
• Forecast 465 TWh
• Actual 1,333 TWh

Note: Shows expected growth in Asian power generation between 2018 and 2025, based on actual 2018 generation, actual 2025 generation, and the 2018 World Energy Outlook's Current Policies Scenario estimates for 2025. Actual 2025 generation figures are from Ember.

I really like illustrators/artists who post their work, or in-progress stuff of their work, but I hate how social media turns artists into people who perform the conception & production of work. Vaguely successful social media artists are performing The Artist's Way all the time & it's so boring

If the UK's far right idiots rioted every time a white person stabbed someone, there'd be no homes left, no country -- they apparently so dearly love -- left. This is so depressing and terrifying. And tbh I think it's weak this article doesn't really address who "the mob" are, it's barely explained

I'm increasingly seeing attempts by writers to turn their writing into comics using AI or using it to supplement their writing with a generated diagram/cartoon, and it has this weird reflex effect of making the flaws in their thought processes more apparent.

Saw Obsession today, loved it. Strikes me we really seem to be in a moment where utter obliteration of the face is the most horrific move in film, and that seems very interesting to me culturally... Like, is it an identity thing? Total destruction of the self? Or is it just the tech is here?
