wow! a new study by glup and shitto has recovered the alleged mexican tyrannosaur labocania aguillonae as a giant early palaeognath with teeth, hereby renamed labokiwi aguillonae! mind-blowing stuff 🤯🦖 doi.org/10.1016/j.oneear.2025.101314 (art by @hodarinundu.bsky.social)
a pair of fearsome labokiwi attack a trio of tyrannosaurids and a large ceratopsid; the backdrop is a blood-red sky, appropriate for the carnage soon to be unleashing by the terrifying labokiwia skeletal also by hodari showing the known elements of labokiwi. it is extremely fragmentary

A few weeks ago CBC reporter Sheena Goodyear reached out to me for comment on the new Spinosaurus paper. I said I couldn’t, because of Epstein connection Nathan Myhrvold’s involvement with it. We got to talking about how paleontology - especially dinosaur research- remains hostile to women. 🧪

This is why scientists will cushion statements about animal behavior with “typically” or “usually.” All it takes is one individual to shake things up.

Many of my colleagues view the story and fate of #Keiko the orca as a failure. I think this underplays the effort and hard work of many smart, passionate people. We learned a lot about cetacean rehabilitation. Keiko got the dignity of passing away in his home waters, far from his tiny tank.

Hi new followers! I love creating illustrations and infographics to share information, especially when it comes to killer whales. Here is a recent one I made covering killer whales of the Gulf of Mexico (and that’s the only name I’ll ever call it 😉)
An infographic titled “Killer whales of the Gulf of Mexico” with a blue gradient background. In the center are a male and female killer whale. On the right of the male is a circular map of the Gulf of Mexico.

Below the title reads the text “Killer whales (Orcinus orca) are rarely seen in the Gulf of Mexico, but recent research has suggested at least some individuals may regularly occur the gulf in offshore waters. A minimum of 49 individuals have been photo-identified here, and some have been resighted over a 26-year period.

In the bottom left, there are illustrations of a sperm whale, Pygmy killer whales, and a generic dolphin. Text above them reads: “Diet: Killer whales in the Gulf of Mexico have been seen pursuing and attacking other cetaceans, such as dwarf sperm whales, dolphins, and sperm whales.”

In the bottom right, there are illustrations of two multi-colored DNA strands. Text reads: “Genetics: Two haplotypes have been found in killer whales from the Gulf of Mexico, one of which is not found elsewhere. This suggests some of the whales may be resident to the Gulf, or descendants of a unique maternal line.”
