I also think this is important to understand because once you understand this about other people, even people you hate, you can understand this about yourself. It makes it easier to address your own problems if acknowledging them doesn't make you feel like you're inherently evil.

Nobody truly does things for no reason. Cruel people are often acting out maladaptive responses to trauma. Once they're adults they're responsible for their own actions, because that's the only way a society can function. But that doesn't change the fact that it's never as simple as "they're bad."

I feel like people really struggle with the idea that people who were mistreated often go on to emulate that behavior in other areas of their life. Many people who feel powerless turn to the easiest way for them to turn the tables and feel powerful. Not all, but many.

But even that huge shift happened in the mid 2010s, not during lockdown. The "popular kids" didn't ruin your geek spaces, they've always been like this. Toxic Steven Universe fans mass-harassed a storyboard artist on the show long before lockdown. None of this stuff is new.

Frankly I think a lot of men in geek/nerd subcultures who got converted into white supremacists got there partially due to them misattributing those feelings and desperately seeking a space where they're inherently considered part of the in-group. Which isn't an excuse, of course. Just a factor.
