I also think this is important to understand because once you understand this about other people, even people you hate, you can understand this about yourself. It makes it easier to address your own problems if acknowledging them doesn't make you feel like you're inherently evil.

Nobody truly does things for no reason. Cruel people are often acting out maladaptive responses to trauma. Once they're adults they're responsible for their own actions, because that's the only way a society can function. But that doesn't change the fact that it's never as simple as "they're bad."

That bully from school wasn't just a dick for fun, they were asserting control in the only way they had been taught in their home life. I feel it's very important to internalize this in order to truly understand why people try to control and hurt other people.

I feel like people really struggle with the idea that people who were mistreated often go on to emulate that behavior in other areas of their life. Many people who feel powerless turn to the easiest way for them to turn the tables and feel powerful. Not all, but many.

The only way it makes sense to me that you think fandom spaces are more toxic now than they were 10 years ago is if you only recently became an adult. I promise you, it's been a hotbed for weirdly defensive and/or combative people this whole time.

But even that huge shift happened in the mid 2010s, not during lockdown. The "popular kids" didn't ruin your geek spaces, they've always been like this. Toxic Steven Universe fans mass-harassed a storyboard artist on the show long before lockdown. None of this stuff is new.

Frankly I think a lot of men in geek/nerd subcultures who got converted into white supremacists got there partially due to them misattributing those feelings and desperately seeking a space where they're inherently considered part of the in-group. Which isn't an excuse, of course. Just a factor.

"Fandoms got meaner after lockdown" strikes me as incredibly false tbh Nerd/geek fandoms have always been filled with people who felt socially ostracized as kids, and as a result often become hostile to people they see as encroaching on "their space."

Almost like someone's personality matters more to a person than their skills tbh; I will happily befriend the nicest people with the skills of an MS Paint user than an incredibly talented artist with an extremely toxic/elitist attitude, you learn to appreciate the little things when you get older

Its fucked beyond belief just seeing this happen, and the worst part? A lot of checkmarks on Twitter are actively clowning and calling the victim an attention whore for daring to speak out against him; its beyond fucked how people are willing to defend abusers and live in denial of their wrong doing
