Many are the actresses who have delighted in these Dorothy Parker classies, which
are certainly stories since they tell tales. But since they are written to be read aloud as Dorothy Parker Stories Read by Shirley Booth
monologues and soliloquies, the tell-tale evidences of meanness, disingenuous conniving,
broken hearts, false hopes and plain obtuseness are revealed marvelously by each woman herself, even as she fatuously succeeds in fooling herself. The listener is not at all fooled.
In the famous monologue Lady with a Lamp, for example, the author wittily skewers her Florence Nightingale with all of the acidity at her command—and no one can command it better-while maintaining the casual atmosphere of a typical bedside visit. In amazingly few strokes we have the whole story of the tormented patient, her hapless love affair and probable future. Miss Parker gives her listener that grand feeling of special insight into character so skilfully that it is necessary to analyze carefully to see how she has done it.
She has wit, compassion, understatement and a marvelous ear for straight talk, pared with the fine precision of her New Yorker writing style. To all of this can be added only one element-the gift of a consummate actress, who can make a situation both funny and tragic at the same time, while deftly creating a genuine human being. This actress, of course, is Shirley Booth.
