Sometimes the art of being a good graphic designer, and other things too I suspect, is being able to explain to someone why you are right without telling them they are wrong.

Two wonderful alt-folk and trad folk releases that I’ve mastered here recently. First up is ‘The Frog, The Mouse, The Ship, The Cabin Boy’ by @bitybooker.bsky.social which is something else. And second is the superb compilation ‘Sing Yonder 2’ curated by @karlsinfield.bsky.social. Big recommends.

Rather handsome book and CD set of Sing Yonder 2, bearing an illustration of an aloof frog. They are set artistically upon a stone path strewn with dried leaves. It's art, trust me.

My day-to-day work is highly contingent on Internet Archive existing. As a researcher of cross-cultural anthropology, huge amounts of texts and books would be otherwise entirely inaccessible to me. It’s a treasure trove of all but forgotten documents.

As is common with all research, I found this 1903 US clipping while looking for something else. They had a travelling tent show that apparently showed pictures while playing music. Did I just discover the inventors of the music video? Possibly. Anyway, meet Mr and Mrs Silver.

News article from 1903 that shows a picture of a couple superimposted on Niagara Falls, and a news article about how Mr and Mrs Silver were the first to put pictures to music for entertainment purposes.

Another folk song about a Lord, but this one got his head chopped off for trying to depose the king of England. Seems a bit harsh. Anyway, some great music and interesting history, and I even got to sneak in some astrophysics. singyonder.substack.com/p/roud-89-lord-d…

Just read this remarkable passage in Bert Lloyd's biography. For someone to be both outraged about some mildly erotic ballads, but also come up with the spectacularly profane and hilarious phrase "the scholarshit of fucklore" is actually quite impressive.

So often when I come across someone who was found singing a song before 1900, we know nothing about the singer other than their name and location. It's great when we get a bit of life story too; Nora recounts the life of Emma Dusenbury brilliantly, well done Matt on finding another great guest!

Well. I hadn't thought of the song in the context of it triggering a violent pro-vegan uprising, but here we are. Very very exciting news (for me anyway, others will almost certainly disagree 🤣) on the Roud 17 contribution front. We are taking traditional song where others fear to tread...

A DM that reads: "Thanks so much for thinking of us for this. In the words of our singer - a staunch vegan: 'I like the sentiment of killing a butcher; I'm in!'. Just got to run it by the others but I think it'll fly. Already got some thoughts on a composition."
