i've got a blogpost idea brewing about how great TTRPGs and board game mechanics deliver on the same principles as great video game animations: anticipation (it triggers excitement before you roll the dice / resolve the mechanic), action, consequence, and then settling (readying for the next event)

introversion is no excuse for not maintaining a busy social life. my friend Shane is really good at running and is both able to and enjoys running really long distances a lot more than I do. he’s clearly a genetic freak. that doesn‘t mean it’s any less good for me to go running than Shane.

it blows my mind the number of fun little TTRPG things that people try to assemble into marketable products for an audience of hundreds at best. i don't begrude anyone who wants to sell their art. i've purchased and enjoyed plenty of it. but i do honestly ask... why?

an AI is going to kill the human race with this but it’ll be because it decided “generate a lethal and highly contagious virus“ was a reasonable step in answering the prompt “get me a burrito”, not in some master plan to replace the human race and pave the planet with solar panels

I’ve been wandering through the medieval churches of Europe for the past month. A thought arises: the difference between 80s 40k art and modern 40k is that the 80s artists were referencing the actual gothic; modern 40k references itself.

I genuinely hate the push to make smoking a thing again. I have watched so many drawn out, ugly, painful deaths from smoking. It makes everything disgusting. It enslaves us to the worst kinds of corporations. There’s ZERO positive here.

there’s three paths: ASI never happens and we muddle along, we build a pro-human future that is friendly to all of us, or we lose. there’s no special pleading based on how many zeros you accumulate in your bank account in the lead-up to the singularity. no special future which is pro-wealthy.

many seem to be reading this essay as a statement that AI *will* take all our jobs and kill everyone, rather than a *response* to the idea that *if* AI does develop the ability to take all our jobs and kill everyone, owning some shares in OpenAI will mean that you get to pick who gets killed.

glad to see someone pop the “permanent underclass” bubble so clearly our future might include super-powerful ASI who can crush all of humanity like a bug, or it might not, but if so they’re not going to choose which humans they crush on the basis of capital holdings borretti.me/article/no-o...

I have met a number of people who worked with Keir Starmer in his pre-political lawyer life and this aligns with how they described him - one of the kindest, smartest, and warmest people they’ve ever worked with. As it turns out, being personally kind/warm/brave/lovely is probably not sufficient!

In Australia, we would rightly do this to any politician. Anthony Albanese (our centre-left PM) won a landslide victory last May. He racks up Assad-like margins in his own local area and he is famously a huge South Sydney Rabbitohs fan. He is regularly booed at their home games.

to my mind, the core of pbta is not "2d6+stat with mixed successes", it's the system of "when x trigger happens in the fiction, apply y specific mechanic". Codified, genre specific moves are its main innovation. If you think pbta is just 2d6+stat with varied levels of success, you missed the point

Strange piece. Prof Holden thunders about a "productivity tax" that "punishes high productivity businesses" by imposing "vastly different effective capital gains tax rates". Except it's not true. His numbers rely on the wrong denominator and money illusion.

For 15 years, there's always somebody proclaiming the end of PbtA or wishing it would come already. They especially seem to hate it when they see someone say "I heard bad things about PbtA, but..." or "I didn't used to like PbtA, but..." It must be pretty frustrating and disappointing for them.

I think 'earning' or 'deserving' or 'good' billionaires or 'bad' billionaires are all sort of missing the point tbh. There are decent people who are billionaires and there are unobjectionable ways to make lots of money but that's not the point. The point is that level of unaccountable power is bad.

Banger of a review; I love it when we get a new qquest… but I do hate it when people say human life isn’t worth living without art. What about all the incredible things art depicts? A picture of a rose may be worth a thousand words but it’s still not a rose!

the 1970s paranormal culture wave continues to be really understudied, I think, as I remarked before we need a big cultural history of the era that focuses on it, like David Palmer's excellent QIGONG FEVER for the Chinese 1980s
