Playing with #FreePascal in #CompilerExplorer. Lines 22 and 23 produce less machine code than lines 25 and 26, yet end up with the same result - trimming the last character from the last item in a TStringList. #Pascal

This won't get old for me. The TopSpeed C compiler 3.10, running on #HaikuOS via emu2, compiling #EDisAsm, a native #Psion #EPOC16 app. The compiler also has to call a number of tools from the SIBO C SDK.

For now I've swapped the screen and bezel with one from a hinge-challenged 3mx I had in bits. That'll get it working for #RetroFest next week. I'll put the old screen aside for another day - hopefully some day I'll be able to return it to its original machine.

Days like today, I try to remember this quote from Ira Glass. Programming is creative. In a world of LLMs, I think many people forget this. I work on projects because I want to learn. I want to create. #CodeIsArt

Nobody tells this to people who are beginners. I wish someone had told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase; they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one piece. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take a while. It’s normal to take a while. You just gotta fight your way through.

#MAME 0.285 compiles on #HaikuOS after adding a small upstream patch (a missing #include). It's available now on HaikuPorts. If you're struggling to compile the latest version of MAME (I bet #FreeBSD and #NetBSD probably have the same issue), give this a go: github.com/mamedev/mame...

#tmuxinator isn't in #ArchLinux 's repos, and the #AUR version breaks whenever a Ruby library gets updated. This happened yesterday, so I'm trying a different #tmux session helper. #tmuxp is a tmux session manager in Python. Also, it's in Arch's repos so shouldn't break on an update. It works well!

As we're all aware, my "specialism" is a multi-level niche. My platform of choice is #Psion 's SIBO, 8086 or V30, all but two of which run the EPOC16 OS. So I've not just specialised in portable computers, or even PDAs. I've gone deep. But that's not specific enough for a nerd like me. Oh no.

Got myself an upgrade for my #HaikuOS box - a Lenovo Tiny M75q gen 2 with a Ryzen 5 Pro 4650GE and 32GB RAM. It's not the fastest processor in the world, butPassMark says it's almost 3 times faster than the M93p with a Xeon 1275Lv3. Let's see how it performs compiling #MAME.

Good news! The #RaspberryPiPico 2 is a drop-in replacement for the original Pico in the #PsiDrive! It seems that the pulldown issue-that-is-officially-not-an-issue doesn't affect this version of the PsiDrive board. I've tried dumping a ROM SSD and it worked with no changes to the code. #Psion

Thought I'd give #ghostty a go. But I've hit a weird problem. Can someone tell me why #KDEPlasma's System Monitor is showing 100% Total Usage on two cores whenever I run ghostty? I don't see it in htop or btop, and it doesn't happen with Kitty or Konsole.

Tiny bit of #retrocomputing for me today, although not as retro as normal. Also, more #retrogaming than normal! I invested a whole £16 in an IPS screen for my #Sony #PSP 1000. Big improvement over the original - still a little ghosty, but nowhere near as bad as the original. And it's much crisper.
