a new studio in the most expensive part of america founded by a longtime industry veteran aiming to launch a large multimedia franchise straight out of the gate? kinda surprised nobody's tried that before to be honest. seems like the kind of thing that'd be a huge success.

People never used mods like this seriously, they were always made to prove a point: in the past, they were made to flex your understanding of both the source and the target game, "I documented them so well, I can do this". Now they flex... that you have tokens to burn, I guess?

I hated it when Construct did this, and I hate that Fusion's doing this. Why the hell would you want to use a lunchbox to make lunch? (I'd probably be less pissy if Fusion 3 existed or was ever going to happen but I think we're approaching the 10th anniversary of it's announcement lmbo)

This is the shit that really upsets me about AI. Not the apocalypse nonsense, but how it allows hacks to drown the world with garbage they "made" and trick people into giving them time and energy. It feels like the ouroboros end state of the attention economy and it sucks

OMG. 29 years ago I put an Easter egg in Duke Nukem 3D Mac, that replaced two of the in-game posters with pictures of a couple plush animals I had. I never told anyone other than my wife about the code (DNGLENDA) and completely forgot I did this. 1/2

If you are starting or planning to get into doom modding. Here are a few tips. -Start work on small scale mods. -Get your feet wet by trying some coding or graphic work. -Its okay to ask for help but be respectful. -Collab with other modders to help you understand stuff. -Don't be a dickwad!

Remember the unwritten rules: If you're gonna do a piracy, keep money out of it. And if you're gonna do a server emulator/network replacement for an modern-ish game, don't share the game files. And if you're an untextured vigilante in a lowpoly Plymouth, NEVER get out of the car.

Same as it ever was. When will people learn that locking access to mods behind Patreon subscription gates is just asking for trouble? It's happened quite a few times now (CoD XLabs, Cyberpunk REAL VR, that one pokemon mod for palworld, etc. etc.), you think it'd sink in by now.

I think of all the social media algos, Instagram's might be the worst. All the others at least have funny jokes or cool drawings every now and then, Instagram is just a deluge of Notes app screenshots from skate shops and tattooists on the other side of the planet, no matter how hard I cultivate it.

seriously, every time you see an old guy going on about our new robot masters, they invariably know what applesoft is. it's approaching conspiracy theory levels at this point.
A screenshot of the Apple II RPG Shadowforge, credited to John Carmack. An excerpt from a blog post by Retro365 (https://retro365.blog/2023/10/04/raid-on-bungeling-bay-will-wrights-first-game/) about SimCity creator Will Wright's early history with computers.

"Living in an apartment in Greenwich Village, Will Wright purchased his first computer, an Apple II+, and started to teach himself Applesoft BASIC, to connect and control the robots and other mechanical things he was building out of random parts at the time. While trying to implement John Conway’s Game of Life into BASIC it became apparent that the cellular automaton simulation needed a much better way of utilizing the computer’s hardware and he dove into Pascal and Assembly Language both lower-level programming languages with fewer layers of abstraction from the underlying hardware."Excerpt from an interview conducted by Antstream (https://www.antstream.com/post/game-developer-interview-the-oliver-twins) with Dizzy creators The Oliver Twins about their early career:

"Antstream Arcade: How did your interest with computers and programming begin?

Philip Oliver: Andrew and I were fascinated by early computer games such as Space Invaders and Pac Man and around 1980, when we were 12, played a lot of games on a friend's Apple II. Our parents bought us a Binatone Pong game that plugged into the TV which was very heavily used, and a year later our older brother bought a ZX81, and we were absolutely hooked on it. We didn't buy any games; instead we used the manual and programmed our own, starting with Pong-style games."Excerpt from an article by Eurogamer (https://www.eurogamer.net/20-years-of-level-5) marking the 20th anniversary of Level 5 in 2018.

"And that's how Level-5 found itself in charge of Japan's most popular video game series, and found itself charged with ushering Dragon Quest into 3D. Akihiro Hino has, you suspect, a knack for making things happen. It's something he's done throughout twenty often remarkable years of Level-5.

And it all began back in Fukuoka, when Hino used to play with an Apple 2 in his youth. At primary school he read an article on Sir-Tech's Wizardry series, and he was fascinated by the possibilities they suggested."
