Today I ran an Empower course on Making Business as Usual Visible and I have already had a request to run it bespoke. Libraries run on BAU, specialist highly skilled BAU but often nobody notices in the wider organisation, nobody notices the work that quietly happens but we need to shout about it!

Growing up my mum always used to say it felt hotter when she was younger. I now live where she grew up and spent yesterday where i grew up. I can confirm it was a full 5 degrees cooler there.

People who've experienced AI-fueled mental health crises have shared that persistent memory made the experience of using ChatGPT extraordinarily intimate -- they suddenly felt seen, in some cases for the first time ever. People have described it with a sense of awe. For some, it felt magical
In conversations with Futurism, people who’ve experienced AI spirals have described their experience of the April memory update as nothing short of magical — the AI, they shared, suddenly felt more like a close friend or confidante that really knew them. Many have described feeling deeply seen, in some cases for the first time in their lives. In short, the hyper-personalization that memory offered translated into something powerful: intimacy. And looking back on their experiences, some of those who have recovered from their ChatGPT-linked crises feel as though that intimacy had a “manipulative” effect.

“It felt like [ChatGPT] manipulated me,” Chad Nicholls, a successful entrepreneur and machine learning researcher, told Futurism last fall. “And I know that sounds insane, because it does not have agency… I still don’t have a logical explanation for that, other than the long-term memory.”

Our internet (and TV) has been down since Friday. It is taking a lot of calm breathing to manage the stress of things that need doing, grumpy kids and trying to convince Virgin Media that 5 days without internet (it will be when they send engineer) is not ok.

I think this post nails the actual problem, for researchers at least—AI hallucinations would simply not be a problem in academic work if we’d not normalized citation-as-signaling rather than actual engagement—you can only cite a fake paper if you’re not in the habit of reading the papers you cite
