By the time we get to October, I will have been away from home for about seven weeks, minus a quick drive home in the middle. Caring for a loved one, then burying them, then settling their estate is a lot of work, but on the plus side I'm going to have a hell of a lot of records to unpack and show.

re: previous post, some 10"ers and EPs from the early 50s have incredible art. for instance, here are the two releases that make up the basic-by-comparison Wardell Gray Memorial- Prestige 7008. If I cared at all about traffic I'd be publishing pages for 1960s Blue Note titles all day long, but instead my brain won't let me sleep unless you have easy access to the most obscure minutiae possible.

I'm also experimenting with how to display reissues for albums that received different names and album covers when being released on new labels, for example Clef or Norgran to Verve in the mid-late 50s. A search on the site for either cat number or title would get you to the page. #jazzsky #vinylsky

New Jazz Tome upgrades: I'm experimenting with ways to show 10" LPs being compiled into 12" LPs, like with the two 10"ers that were compiled into Phil Woods' Pot Pie on New Jazz in 1963. thejazztome.info/phil-woods-p... #jazzsky #vinylsky

I've got a lot on my plate now, dealing with a family emergency, but this is the kind of thing I would love to be able to help with. If the newspaper would be amenable to me just transcribing his what I assume was weekly column, I'd happily host the whole thing, jazz or not jazz. That's real history

My ears perked up when I read this. As someone that archives jazz reviews, are 1970s-90s St Paul Pioneer issues available online anywhere? Doesn't look like newspapers dot com has them and the historical society stops at 1961.

First time hearing a record from the Charlie Parker label, which was ran by his widow Doris in the early 1960s. This LP was recorded by someone sneaking a tape recorder into the Savoy Ballroom in 1950 and sounds atrocious/incredible, depending on how much of a jazz sicko you are. #jazzsky #vinylsky
Lester Young - Pres is Blue, PLP-405, a 1961 release on Charlie Parker Records. Recorded from the Savoy Ballroom in 1950. I think there's a drop of water on the cover because with all the crowd noise it sounds like Pres is playing in the ocean.A blue LP label displaying side one

Did I "need" this? No. Is it a "practical" investment? No. Am I "behind on my mortgage?" That's none of your business. But all I know is that I have one more Impulse spine for the shelves and a little extra Television dust in the house, and it's absolutely worth it.

I love this painting by Peggy Tolk-Watkins and therefore I must track down this album for my collection. #jazzsky #vinylsky
From the liner notes of the Desmond album: This album represents the first serious attempt to fuse primitive art with modern jazz. The painting from which the cover was reproduced is a prime example of the art of Peggy Tolk-Watkins, who has long been the leader of the San Francisco Bay Area’s primitive art school. Tolk-Watkins has a permanent exhibition on display at one of the nation’s finest galleries, The Fallen Angel in San Francisco.

Bill Evans - Everybody Digs Bill Evans (1959)

A gold cover, with quotes written in big block white text.

"I've sure learned a lot from BIll Evans. He plays the piano the way it should be played. - Miles Davis

Bill Evans is one of the most refreshing pianists I have heard in years. - George Shearing

I think Bill Evans is one of the finest. - Ahmad Jamal

Bill Evans has rare originality and taste and the even rarer ability to make his conception of a number seem the definitive way to play it. - Julian "Cannonball" AdderleyJack Montrose and All-Stars including Red Norvo - The Horn's Full (1958)

There's a classy lady inside the giant saxophone. Can someone help her out, please?Philly Joe Jones is dressed up as Dracula. At least, I assume that's him? I guess I don't know that to be a fact. Turns out the guy is a book nut, and I think that's delightful. Also there's a bat hanging off his drumstick. Why would he drum with a bat on his drumstick? Because he's Dracula and he does what he wants. There's a blue cat, hopped up on cat nip, hanging from a chandelier. Nothing else matters.

A cool thing about building your own site is that you can do it however you want. Always bugged me that the Modern Jazz Quartet was attributed to Milt Jackson only, so I built out my page to give the entire band billing. An MJQ search at TJT takes you here: thejazztome.info/glossary/hsj... #jazzsky
A black and white, Creative Commons licensed photo of the Modern Jazz Quartet standing in front of an airplane.
