A fine record from some legends, but I can't even begin to understand why they had to use a picture of a picture (with the binding showing!) for the cover. It doesn't make a lick of sense. I need a podcast about the decisions that led up to it.
Stanley Bros. and the Clinch Mountain Boys record frontStanley Bros. and the Clinch Mountain Boys record back (King 615)The edge of the album, which shows the comb binding of a book or portfolio or something. Why was that picture on the cover of something like that in 1959 anyway? Were they also doing corporate seminars?

This album sounds so, so good, and I'd wager that this actual copy was never played before I got it. The guy I bought it from said it survived two garage sales with a $5 asking price. Well, OK, then!

Did I "need" this? No. Is it a "practical" investment? No. Am I "behind on my mortgage?" That's none of your business. But all I know is that I have one more Impulse spine for the shelves and a little extra Television dust in the house, and it's absolutely worth it.

This was an instant-buy for me because I love piano-bass duos and because I trust Niels to have good taste and play the heck out of a danged bass. I was not expecting it to be *this* good. I'll need to sit on it for a while, but it's making me think it's up there. This One's for Blanton good.

I pretty much pick up any cheap Pablo record and anything with Joe Pass, so this was a no-brainer, but I didn't expect to like it as much as I did. It's an updated Basie, but not in a corny or forced way – a natural evolution, shown off in a killer combo.

One of my biggest musical gaps – a common one – is the era right before the Beatles. Music changed so much after that it's easy to ignore whatever was hot right before. This is so, so much fun. Listen to the crowd! You see it at every thrift store, so it shouldn't be too hard to find a clean one.

Sioux warriors teach your children
The white man's evil tongue
Make them know the name of Crazy Horse
And the battles he has won
So they will know the truth
When it's knowledge that they crave
Let them sing of the Land of the Free
And the Home of the Brave
And of the Great White Father that dug my grave

[Verse 6]
Brown rivers once were blue
Now the fish float upside-down
Ancestral burial grounds
That's where you've built your towns
The smokestacks from your factories
They pollute my skies
You slaughtered all my buffalo
And you left me here to die
And all of this you have done in the name of God

A great way for me to tell if I'll like a record that isn't in high demand is if it was repressed in Japan, especially in the last decade. They know ball, so trombones, vibraphones, and vocals never fell out of style there. Listening now, and it's great.
