re: previous post, some 10"ers and EPs from the early 50s have incredible art. for instance, here are the two releases that make up the basic-by-comparison Wardell Gray Memorial- Prestige 7008. I'm also experimenting with how to display reissues for albums that received different names and album covers when being released on new labels, for example Clef or Norgran to Verve in the mid-late 50s. A search on the site for either cat number or title would get you to the page. #jazzsky #vinylsky

First time hearing a record from the Charlie Parker label, which was ran by his widow Doris in the early 1960s. This LP was recorded by someone sneaking a tape recorder into the Savoy Ballroom in 1950 and sounds atrocious/incredible, depending on how much of a jazz sicko you are. #jazzsky #vinylsky
Lester Young - Pres is Blue, PLP-405, a 1961 release on Charlie Parker Records. Recorded from the Savoy Ballroom in 1950. I think there's a drop of water on the cover because with all the crowd noise it sounds like Pres is playing in the ocean.A blue LP label displaying side one

I love this painting by Peggy Tolk-Watkins and therefore I must track down this album for my collection. #jazzsky #vinylsky
From the liner notes of the Desmond album: This album represents the first serious attempt to fuse primitive art with modern jazz. The painting from which the cover was reproduced is a prime example of the art of Peggy Tolk-Watkins, who has long been the leader of the San Francisco Bay Area’s primitive art school. Tolk-Watkins has a permanent exhibition on display at one of the nation’s finest galleries, The Fallen Angel in San Francisco.

Bill Evans - Everybody Digs Bill Evans (1959)

A gold cover, with quotes written in big block white text.

"I've sure learned a lot from BIll Evans. He plays the piano the way it should be played. - Miles Davis

Bill Evans is one of the most refreshing pianists I have heard in years. - George Shearing

I think Bill Evans is one of the finest. - Ahmad Jamal

Bill Evans has rare originality and taste and the even rarer ability to make his conception of a number seem the definitive way to play it. - Julian "Cannonball" AdderleyJack Montrose and All-Stars including Red Norvo - The Horn's Full (1958)

There's a classy lady inside the giant saxophone. Can someone help her out, please?Philly Joe Jones is dressed up as Dracula. At least, I assume that's him? I guess I don't know that to be a fact. Turns out the guy is a book nut, and I think that's delightful. Also there's a bat hanging off his drumstick. Why would he drum with a bat on his drumstick? Because he's Dracula and he does what he wants. There's a blue cat, hopped up on cat nip, hanging from a chandelier. Nothing else matters.

A cool thing about building your own site is that you can do it however you want. Always bugged me that the Modern Jazz Quartet was attributed to Milt Jackson only, so I built out my page to give the entire band billing. An MJQ search at TJT takes you here: thejazztome.info/glossary/hsj... #jazzsky

Was hoping to get this posted on the 77th anniversary of one of the recording dates, 04/22 (1949), but I'm a few minutes late. Here is Miles Davis' Birth of the Cool, a 1957 reissue that didn't get as much fanfare at the time as you might assume. thejazztome.info/miles-davis-... #jazzsky #musicsky
Don't know what to say about this one. This is about as iconic of a cover as was released in the 1950s. Black and white, with Miles taking up the bottom right third of the cover, in sunglasses and a collared shirt. He's deep in the sauce. Text includes a track list off to the side, plus BIRTH OF THE COOL and miles davis in white print against the black background. COOL is in red.

Found an incredible four thousand word piece by Nat Hentoff in the May 1957 issues of Down Beat where he goes in depth with Gil Evans about his work w/r/t the release of Birth of the Cool. Especially notable is this passage which reveals Gil to be a staunch union man. You simply love to see it.
"There are other reasons for my not having done too much jazz writing in the last few years. As I said, I have a kind of direction of my own that seems to cross three things-pop, jazz, and sound. Now I feel ready to do more jazz."

"An additional reason is that I won't write underscale. There's a lot of underscale writing in the business, package deals whereby an arranger does a certain amount of scores for so much money. A lot of a&r men work that way, and there are enough good craftsmen and some creative writers who go along. I'm enough of a union member to refuse. It makes me too mad."

"I feel a lot of victories were won in the union movement by men who had to sacrifice a lot, and it's a shame to have it thrown down the drain by the next generation."

"A friend of mine, a young writer just getting started, was told by an a&r man at a relatively new major label that if he insisted on charging scale, he'd never be used there again."

"You have to decide what kind of a writer you're going to be. You've got to have enough confidence in your own ability to stick up for scale."Here is a portion of the 1947 Claude Thornhill band for which Gil Evans
wrote. Back row-Mario Rullo, Danny Polo, Lee Konitz, and Bill Bushing; front row-Sandy Siegelstein, Willie Wechsler, Mickey Folus, Joe Shulman (bass), and Billy Exiner (drums)

Jazz Giant McLean Has Got His Act Altogether
By GENE SANTORO
AS A YOUNG MAN, ALTO SAX great Jackie McLean was haunted by demons. Addicted to drugs as a kid, accused of playing out of tune for decades, he survived.

Now, at age 63, McLean is a fixture on the big-time jazz cireuit - like the
Village Vanguard, where his sextet starts tomorrow. With his rare ability to play fluently in mainstream and avant-garde styles, his imaginative melodic leaps, and his uniquely slippery and edgy tone, his music, once a source of scorn, is today a source of wonder.

McLean's road to the top was full of switchbacks.
Like his childhood pal Sonny Rollins, he grew up on Harlem's Sugar Hill, where he picked up the alto at 15.

The two teenagers became huge fans of bebop pioneer Charlie Parker. Like many of the "little Birds," as Bird's followers were called, they imitated their hero's brilliant musical breakthroughs and his debilitating heroin habit.

McLean cleaned up, and forged a career that taught him to rove across jazz' stylistic panorama. Rollins, Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Art Blakey these diverse, high-profile bandlead ers all gave the altoist a forum to explore his one-of-a-kind sound.

Like them, McLean embodies jazz' oral tradition,
where young uns pick up tricks of the trade onstage from vets.

"There's nothing like learning it night after night, in front of an audience," he explains. "I came up that
way. It keeps the music alive - and it works."

At the Village Vanguard,
178 Seventh Ave. South (at W. 11th St.), tomorrow
through Sunday. Call (212) 255-4031.

(Santoro writes about music for The News.)

LP - 010 Kenny Burrell - Asphalt Canyon Suite Verve - V6-8773 (1969) New find for me, really love the late night vibes of side one. #vinylsky #jazzsky
Kenny, who appears to have just sent his steak back at a fancy restaurant, is in the foreground of this album cover. Some highrises, assumedly of a NYC variety, are in the background. ASPHALT

LP 007 - J.J. Johnson - Blue Trombone Columbia - CL 1303 (1959) #vinylsky #jazzsky
Blue Trombone's cover consists of a trombone up against a dark blurry background; perhaps a window with a dark street outside? Most importantly here, we have Max Roach, Paul Chambers, and Tommy Flanagan listed. This is all hall of fame talent.A famous Columbia six-eye label. It's red, with white Columbia lettering, and six black and white peacock eyes, spread three on each side.

LP 006 - Jimmy McGriff - Concert Friday The 13th Cook County Jail Groove Merchant - GM 515 (1973) #vinylsky #jazzsky
A picture of Cook County Jail with a black border around it. Jimmy McGriff, Lucky Htompson, George Freeman, and O'Donel Levy are listed as participants in the concert.I've always loved the Groove Merchant label. The red white and blue lettering is recognizable from across the room.

LP 005 - Buddy Emmons - Emmons Guitar Inc. Emmons – ELP-1001 (1969) #vinylsky #jazzsky my favorite pedal steel player. this one is for @starclusterr.bsky.social.
Cover of the album shows a black and white shot of a man leaning on a pedal steel that's named after him, deep in thoughtYou now have Danny Boy stuck in your head for the rest of the day. Sorry, I don't make the rules.A couple of cool photos from the back of the album jacket. Note the North Carolina building on the bottom in particular. Here's the same building from 2012, via google streetview. Most of the letters stayed put for 40ish years. When google returned here in 2015, the place was a HVAC dealer.

LP 004 - Zoot Sims - Zoot Sims Quartet Argo - LP 608 (1958/1975) thejazztome.info/zoot-sims-zo... #vinylsky #jazzsky
A black and white cover of a man (Zoot Sims) blowing either an alto or a tenor saxophone. Can't really tell here. Also on the date are Bass – Knobby Totah, Bass; Gus Johnson, Drums; and Johnny Williams on piano. This was originally issue by Argo in 1957.This is a mid-70s Cadet reissue. I'm guessing they bought up Argo's catalog at some point.

LP 003 - The Cars - The Cars Elektra – 6E-135 (1976/2025)
The cover to the self-titled Cars album displays a lady with red fingernails and red lipstick having a good time while driving a car. There's also a Rhino High Fidelity OBI on this copy displaying the frills of the latest reissue. This is side 1 of The Cars' debut. While this is a solid collection of songs, it's really side two where the magic happens.
