Unfortunately, media has taken the upper bound of one model estimate (among many) and run with it to say Lake Sturgeon *could* live for over 400 years. This isn’t necessarily what the science says, and methods used are somewhat tenuous. Several other fish aging experts agree it’s an overestimate.

Just saw a new preprint by Graham Short et al. in the Journal of Lost Species. They describe a new genus of seahorses with the common name of "Sea Muppets," which sounds like an insult Gordon Ramsey would use if they did an episode of Kitchen Nightmares on a cruise ship.

I make a comic for @cornellbirds.bsky.social's Living Bird magazine called Birdword. It's about ornithological terminology. Here's my latest one.
A piece of paper torn from a dictionary that says "hybridization: noun. When birds belonging to two different species produce offspring. Hybrid offspring often display a mix of characteristics from both parents' species." The next panel shows a labeled Common Hybrids showing a golden-winged warbler and blue-winged warbler hybrid, a beautiful blue and yellow songbird with a black mask, and a mallard x northern pintail, with a green head, rusty breast and long curled tail. The third panel, labeled Rare Hybrids, shows a yellow warbler x black-throated blue warbler, a pale gray and yellow songbird with gray markings, and a green jay x blue jay, a bird with a black mask on a blue face and a fancy blue tail. The fourth panel, labeled Hybrids I Want to See, shows a ruby-throated hummingbird x grater sage grouse hybrid, with a tiny head, tiny wings, and huge air sacs for display, and a northern cardinal x anhinga, a red bird with a long snaky neck and tiny cardinal head.

On this #EarthDay, let us also remember the species that are no longer with us 🐡 #ChinesePaddlefish
An illustration of a group of five Chinese Paddlefish. They swim near a silty river bottom, the water a greenish aqua. Rays of sun filter through the choppy water surface, illuminating the backs of the fish. Two fish are in the foreground, around the viewer's eye level; one fish is closer to the water's surface, nearly silhouetted against the reflected sky; and two fish are in the background, blurry and void of detail. The fish are swimming toward the right, with the lower left corner of the illustration fading into black. Chinese Paddlefish were declared extinct in 2020.

The oldest European depiction of a gar I have found so far from a map of 'New France' circa 1612. In 1609, Samuel de Champlain previously reported seeing a 'Chaousarou' (the Iroquois name) in Lake Champlain, and the written description fit that of a gar. 1/2

Sharks DO get cancer, as in this Great White observed in 2014 near Australia. Every vertebrate species, with long enough observation, will display cancerous growth, because cancer is "baked-in" to multicellularity & the capacity for growth. Rates vary by species, but *cancer is a constant*.
Four images of two sharks, a great white showing clear growth from the lower jaw near the toothline. The other a bronze whaler with a growth between the eye and dorsal fin.
